KB982018 & KB2522422 Update Failure

Hello:

Saw the other thread re: today's patches, but since I am having trouble with 2 of them, I opted to start a new thread (I hope that's OK).

Installed 4 of the 6 just fine, with a reboot for KB2515325.
However, when I tried the 2 listed in my subject title, even though the initial installation was "successful", they failed during the configuration upon reboot & "reverted".

KB982018 failed with error code 80070057.
KB2522422 failed with error code 800F0826.

I found this article here:

& attempted to follow the instructions by attempting another Windows Update of only KB982018.
It failed again during configuration after the reboot with the same error code.

I have not yet tried to reinstall KB2522422 by itself.

By way of info, I don't have an "advanced format disk" (at least I don't think I do?), and have not yet updated IE8 to IE9; nor do I have a Canon printer.

1) Could this be why these failed to install?
2) Do I need either of these updates?
3) In which case, how do I resolve this?
4) Should I try to update IE to IE9 and then try 2522422 again?
5) Or is it OK to hide both of these for now, since neither seems to apply to my system?

(I've never had a problem with Windows Updates on this rig before today...)

Update: KB2522422 now OK, still need help w/ KB982018

Partial success.
After finding this excellent (as always) tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...oad-standalone-msu-installer-file.html?filter , I was able to MANUALLY install KB2522422. No reboot was needed.

Given that KB982018 failed during configuration after the required reboot using Windows Update, and the fact that the error code was different from the one I got with KB2522422, I have not yet tried this tutorial for manual install of the standalone file for KB982016.

1) Is it worth a try?
2) Or should I try first to update IE8 to IE9 first (it is currently a "hidden" update that was offered to me ~1 week ago)?

I found this article: Hotfix KB982018 won't install on Win 7-64 bit - Microsoft Answers, but I don't understand what it explains. I do understand that what was once a hotfix is now an official Windows Update patch, but I don't grasp the recommended solution.

When I checked in the Windows Action Center it tried to "find solutions" for the update problems (there were none), but I know it sent some CBS logs to MS.
If someone could tell me how to retrieve those logs, I'd be happy to post them, if it would help.

I await your most excellent advice and assistance.

I'd go here and download the stand alone of KB982018. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018
Download is toward the bottom of the page.
Select your version of Windows which is x64 according to your specs.
See if it now installs properly.

Next, since KB982016 is listed only as hotfix at the moment install the above first.
Then see if Win Update will install this correctly.

If not this is the page to request the Hotfix directly from MS.

They have provided a link to a Hotfix download in an email in less than ten minutes for me twice in the last few weeks.

You need to install KB982018 LAST. Apparently it will NOT install until or unless you've FIRST installed one or all of: KB2492386, KB2515325 & KB2522422.

Just had all four fail and revert on me, until I installed the other three and then applied KB982018. So... yeah. :huh:

It's just one of them - the KB982018 was listed at the bottom, but it was the second to be installed. No problems.

Thanks to Hopalong X, I followed your suggestion, and it worked fine.
Also, Before I visited this site for advice, I also deselected KB982018 and installed all the other updates successfully.
I'm running Win 7 H.Prem. 64 bit, and do not have either Service Pack 1 or Internet Explrer 9 installed

I will try the standalone installer for KB982018, perhaps with the added suggestion from a reply email from MS to do so in "Clean Boot Mode", in case a program (AV or other) might be preventing the install.

That seems to make sense, though I doubt that is causing the problem. (But it will be a bit of a pain, since I use selective startup and will need to restore my services and startup programs back to what I use, not the default full/normal configuration...)

Failing that...

The next step will be to try to reset Windows Update, using Brink's tutorial, option #2 (or the MS tool which I assume accomplishes the same thing).

If that doesn't work either, then MS suggested running KB947281 (the Win Update Readiness tool).
After that, it will be submitting CBS and Win Update logs, I suppose.

FWIW, KB982018 actually "successfully installed" and the configuration during the shutdown for the required reboot was OK.
It was only during the configuration AFTER restarting that the process failed.

Does that make a difference in terms of suggesting where the problem may be?

I went into Windows Update and found '18' and three others had failed for five consecutive days. I selected all the updates EXCEPT '18' and then ran updated with success. Rebooted and went through the manual step again just for '18' and it, too, was successful.
