Keeping Chrome permanently unchecked in Startup?

My major browser is Firefox, and Chrome is my secondary browser. When the computer is booted up and I go to msconfig>startup, Chrome is checked. I uncheck it and there it is again on the next startup. How do I permanently keep Chrome unchecked in Startup?

You might see if deleting or disabling Chrome from your startup programs using one of the other options in the tutorial below instead may work better.

Hi Brink. After reading the tutorial, I think that I made a mistake in posing the problem, and at the same time had found a solution...I think.

When I looked at the start menu, it only had one program listed. This was the only program that should have been listed. So, where was Chrome? Well, I fiddled around with msconfig and startup, and here's what I think I found out. The Chrome box in startup becomes checked when one opens Chrome. If I close Chrome but don't uncheck the box, or close the computer without unchecking the box, the Chrome box is checked on rebooting. If the startup Chrome box is unchecked and the computer shut down, on rebooting the box is unchecked.

So, bottom line (I think): At booting, Chrome is only in startup when it is not removed for said box at shut down???

Hi flycaster,

In addition to what Brink has suggested, you may also try modifying the following settings of Chrome :

• Open Google Chrome
• Click on Show advanced settings
• Scroll down to bottom and uncheck 'Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed'.

Alternatively, you may right click Google Chrome icon in system tray (bottom right corner where time is displayed) and click on Let Google Chrome run in the background and see if it helps.

The startup box for Google Chrome in msconfig is overridden by settings of Google Chrome, which may be the reason why it is checked as soon as you open Chrome.

Please share the findings.

Sundeep B, "Continue running..." was already unchecked. Chrome icon is not displayed in system tray, just the task bar. And, BTW, after opening Chrome, I checked msconfig>startup and the Chrome box was not checked??? I think it is best for me just to not pay any attention to this.

Thanks for the response. It appears that anomaly with Google Chrome is not hugely impacting the system usage. Though it could be Chrome's innate behavior, I feel somewhat confused at this stage and would need more clarity around this subject to help you better. Feel free to share the screenshots to show, what exactly is happening; and what is expected. I'll be glad to take things forward from there.

Just to add a little more to the confusion. I forget whether I was running Adwcleaner or CCleaner, but I got an alert that Chrome was running and needed to be closed. Well, as far as I knew, Chrome had been closed a while ago, so a checked a few things. Chrome was unchecked in msconfig>startup. Chrome's icon in the taskbar was was showing closed (not highlighted and no secondary icon). I then checked Sysinternal's Process Explorer, and sure enough, there was Chrome.exe! I killed Chrome's process and continued with my computer cleaning.

To make sure that I'm not crazy, I just opened Chrome and checked it out with Process Explorer. Not only was Chrome.exe there, but it was there about 10 times (in orange?). I then closed Chrome and there was only one Chrome.exe in the Process Explorer...even though it had just been closed! Gremlins or what?

What are "chrome updaters?" Whatever it is, all I want to do is know that when I close chrome, it is closed.

I doubt there is a way, (easy way)
Chrome has become pretty restricted settings wise and deeply buried into the bios of windows.
The only good Chrome is never installing Chrome.

How about this:

• Download Autoruns
• Run Autoruns as Administrator
• At the top go to Options> Filter Options...
  • Check these:
    
• Click the little floppy icon at the top to before! any changes are made to save a copy of the original startup in case something is has been broken in the process .
• Find the entry(ies) of Chrome you want to get rid of, uncheck them and simply exit the program and reboot the PC.

NOTE!
Disabling the wrong entry may result in Windows not booting properly or not at all!
Make sure you know what you're disabling.

Yeah, didn't like Chrome, which is good as I always see things such as this. It keeps a process running always. Perhaps the Updater as suggested.
