Solved Keeping Desktop Icons Permanent

I have several external hard drives attached to my laptop, but whenever I unplug the hard drives from my laptop and replug it in, the image from the hd icons and computer icon disappear, showing just a generic white image. How can I prevent this from happening so I don't have to change the icon every time I reattach my hds?

Also is there a way to get rid of the arrow on the icons?

I just realized my icon images were on my external hd.

do they rearrange themselves or just turn white?

I never had that happen but I use iconoid to keep things where I want them.

It was because my icon images were stored on the external hd.
Moving the icon images to the laptop hd fixed the problem.

Yes, but only if you are prepared to loose the arrow from all your shortcut icons. It's an all-or-nothing choice, you cannot change it individually for some icons and keep it on others.
