Solved Keyboard and mouse problems PS/2 and USB

I think I missed your previous edit which was what confused me.

I'm still a little confused though. Is it that the Windows 7 disc probably doesnt have the drivers needed for the input devices or at least the USB at the front?

So how do I try these other drivers? Should I reinstall XP, then install a set of drivers, then try 7 again? and keep doing that whole process if the set I choose doesnt work? or is there a way to install the drivers in it's current state? Without reverting back to XP.

First you have to be able to download and save them in a temp folder. But not having the keyboard and mouse working automatically limits your options as far as getting them installed. Plus some may have compatibility issues.

Once the chipset, memory controller, sata/Raid controllers often through the Windows updates as optional hardware driver sets are installed the usb controller drivers along with those the only other drivers would be for the keyboard and mouse if they are programmable or media type with a separate software/driver update for each needed as far as the extra functions.

The standard mouse and keyboard functions should already be working however if that model board had adequate usb support. Looking over the bios section in the user manual(If found online) to go over the various sections including whether or not it saw a usb keyboard support option enabled is another thing to mention here.

A good number of older boards for XP systems simply did not support usb keyboards as far as getting into the bios and installing the OS! You had to wait until Windows was running and then the detection of new hardware would see the prompt for drivers if needed.

A standard PS/2 keyboard would be needed for anything other then being in a Windows session. A PS/2 adapter was often a way around that problem for both mice and keyboards alike. In fact even on the present build with a much newer AM3 board the optical mouse requires one for things like powering up the machine while the keyboard remains plugged into a rear usb port.

I can download the drivers on another PC. Just dont know how I would go about installing them.

I have looked through the BIOS quite a lot, for things about USB support and I have made sure "USB Legacy" support for k+M are both enabled. - It also mentions mass storage so I do think i would have been able to install 7 via USB... but based on what I'm gathering Win 7 doesnt support this machine without getting the correct drivers.

So If I can get the drivers, how can I install them? do u not need to be in win 7 to install win 7 drivers? At the moment input devices are only working for the BIOS and a boot cd. I could possibly get back to xp but still wouldn't know how to install the drivers exactly.

Being able to get into the bios shows something is working. But that's strictly keyboard not mouse being used there.

You certainly would need to get any mouse working in order to get 7 running even if you need to get a USB to PS/2 adapter that usually comes included with any new usb mouse optical or other.

One thing I tend to suspect is that the front usb ports are not being detected as they should being additional ports. Tracing the wires from the rear ports to the main block and plugging those wires into the secondary block could get the rear ports working but not solve the installation problem.

As for LBA or Logical Block Addresses that is strictly for internal not external drives and deals with the original limitations seen with bioses when hard drive capacities were first seen increasing from 1gb or larger back in the 90s. The old bioses would only partitially realize any drive over a certain size where you then had to enter the actual capacity in the bios setup there.

As for getting drivers to go on before reaching the desktop for the first time you would see this more with a 7 iso where MS updates are slipstreamed into a new iso as well as SP1. But if the mouse and keyboard refuse to work once you past the post tests or in the installation and stall you end up at Square #1 all over again.

Well the mouse works too. USB on the front that is. Cause i use the mouse when in the boot cd.

I have a ps/2 mouse. No luck with it. Although it's not Packard Bell so maybe that's the issue. I'm gonna open the case again and examine the usb and try what u suggested if i can identify the parts.

Theres also some useless stuff in there that ill unplug, like a TV Card.

EDIT: Well Iv given up on win7. Used an old XP disc that i used on my old desktop and it worked ok. So iv got XP back on it.... Surpringly I tested the ethernet and it's fine. It's right next to the usb and ps/2 that don't work but the ethernet works fine. Which was a surprise.

At least with this itll be a nice clean installation. Ill grab a usb hub and it'll do fine. I guess it was just too old for 7. May be possible too much hassle really.

Thanks for all the responses and being patient with me Night Hawk. It's sometimes helpful just to bounce thoughts of people etc.

It's a shame that you couldn't get 7 to work on it as well as all the problems the board seems to have. As far as the keyboard and mouse you may be the lucky one to find a Packard Bell replacement as easy as you had found the same board again on EBay or through the PB support if there's any original replacement parts in stock.

It's kind of nice when you can use whatever keyboard and mouse you like other the proprietary stuff however! :( That gives you far more options to choose from! The important thing since you are going to setting this up for someone else however is getting everything you can working as far as OS as well as the hardwares where they wouldn't be stumped at why this or that doesn't work.

Hope it goes well just the same. Good luck with it! :D
