Solved Keyboard problem

Hello,

For some while now I am using a laptop ( given by friends) send to me from Holland.

I have got used now to the fact that the " is above the 2 and the @ is above the ' and I can live with that.

But now I can not find the / ( but the others way up if you know what I mean ) That should be on the right-hand side of the ] and } tap.

When I tap the key on the right-hand side of the ] and shift } , I see # and "shift" ~

Does anybody have an idea's what to do to get this right ?

/ is a forward slash.

\ is a back slash.

On my very ordinary full size keyboard, the forward slash is just to the left of the right side shift key and just to the right of the period-----not to the right of the closing bracket.

My back slash key IS to the right of the closing bracket---immediately below the backspace key. Which I guess is where your forward slash is?

My ~ and # keys are both to the left side of the number keys.

Is that a seriously down-sized keyboard of some type?

Have you tried all available keys?

There are different keyboard layouts---have you Googled for various layouts?

Yes, I have been looking on the net for this problem, some suggested I had an American or an other language keyboard. And no it's not a downsized keyboard but a full-size keyboard on de big HP Presario CQ 70 laptop ( as you can read in my system specs ) from the 1990 somewhere. I sort of inherited this with the problems.

So to be really clear ; I cannot find a back slash. Where it is supposed to be I have # and if I press shift this ~ comes up. The Key sits right in between the backspace key above and the enter key underneath.

Perhaps my keyboard has gone severely dyslectic like his owner ?

Sadly the images at HP's own support site are terrible.

But I found an image at Newegg of what is supposed to be a replacement KB for this model.

New Laptop keyboard for HP Compaq Presario CQ40-700 CQ41-200 CQ45-100 CQ45-200 CQ45-300 CQ45-400 US layout Silver Color-Newegg.com

I'm not sure if the specs match exactly (especially if yours is European), but...
Does that look like what you have and/or show you what you need to see?

Hi Moxi that is exact my key board. I have an extra bit on the r/h side that is I think you call numeric or something like that.

So when I press your tab ( red back slash) I get # (and + shift ~)

If I press the 2 + shift I get "
If I press the ' + shift I get @

Cannot work it out but need the back slash desperately to work in command prompt

Well, then it sounds as if it's similar, but not exactly the same..?

Perhaps the prior owner somehow configured hotkeys or other customizations?
Perhaps contact HP/Compaq?

Sorry, I'm out of ideas (especially without a screen shot of your KB from YOUR laptop...).

I hope someone else can help to resolve your issue.

THAT sounds like the most promising suggestion, yet.
I was thinking along those lines, but am not familiar enough with hardware to know how to do that.

Hi Guys, I have been along that line before,

Now on Torchwood's suggestion I have been back today ( it is already on English UK ) but I have gone a bit further,

Does this screenshot make any sense to any of you ?

Sorry, the working language on this computer is Dutch , an other thing that drives me mad.

Well,one really good side effect happened, by trying everything they propose on the net, I managed by accident to change the working language on this windows 7 Professional laptop from Dutch to English !!!!!

So it IS possible !!!!!

Ok back to the problem.

When I type the back slash key it displays (#).

Here a screenshot of my keyboard ;

I will continue my research on the Net, if I find the solution I let you know.

PS can have to do with languages, numeric keys and much more, or just a stupid mistake in the past by me or a former owner, but I need to solve it, and .... I am not the only one with this problem

Ok, problem solved, I looked on Wikipedia at the difference between En-Uk and EN USA input for keyboards and found out that I was using an American English keyboard with UK English software.:tip:

So I have changed my input language from UK English to UA English. Problem solved.
