OK, just recently, I put a drive in my DVD and nothing happened. I took a look at my device list and My DVD-ROM has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. Clicking on properties gives this error: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

The DVD is listed as a PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P ATA device. It is installed in a Dell M6300 laptop workstation.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting, but it comes back with the same error.

Anyone have any idea of how I might proceed to try to get it back? It does show up in bios. Remember I don't have the drive available in Windows. I tried a startup repair, but it had no effect.

Thanks in advance.

Try booting from the drive. Can you load the Windows DVD or repair disc?

Has the device worked in the past?

Can you slip it out of the slot and reinstall it, maybe a bad connection.

Have you tried using Device Manager in Safe Mode?

I notice there are no Win 7 drivers for your system on the Dell Site, are you using Win 7 included drivers?

You uninstalled the driver, but did you try uninstalling the device in Device manager? You might even remove the device from the computer and boot a couple of times with it removed.

I can boot to the Windows DVD and did a start-up repair. It had no effect regarding fixing the DVD in Windows. I don't think I created a repair disk yet. And since, I can't use the DVD now, I'm not sure how I could. Although I do have a 2GB SD card I could use in the built in SD reader.

Yes, the drive has worked in the past. I'm not sure what caused it to fail. I also looked for drivers from Dell and found none. I removed the drive, re-started the machine. It took a long time to boot. Shut down and re-installed the drive. Still no drive in Windows.

If it makes any difference, the label on the drive indicates it is a Phillips & Benq, model number DS-8W1P 05C rev A01.

I also tried to do a system restore from a few days ago, but it appears the the system restores are corrupted as it could not read any if them.

Off to the troubleshooter.

The troubleshooter looked promising going through the step, but it could not fix the issue. It knows there is a DVD drive, tried to re-install the driver, but it still has the same issue and error.

Theog, I tried your suggestion. I installed the software and it ran a troubleshooter as well. It saw the problem, tried to install new drivers, but also failed. It also noticed that I am missing a base driver, but I know that has been missing since I installed Win7 and when the DVD was working.

In looking at solutions pertaining to my error message, I see comments to play in the registry. in particular the registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I have not done anything with that entry yet.

Ok, I went into the registry, backed up the location above and deleted the 'upper filters' and 'lower filters' entries and rebooted the machine. After the re-boot, the DVD seems to be working just fine.

DVD Problem with the yellow exclamation mark fixed

I tried everything that was posted here as well. Deleting the device downloading new drivers and the whole thing , nothing worked. But the last post did work.

If you run into this issue do the following to get you fixed:

Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Back up the location above and delete the 'upper filters' and 'lower filters' entries.

Go back to device manager and reinstall the devices. This time no error.
