Laptop fan on full at startup for 5 minutes

ok, good. Windows knows what is best for drivers. I have had issues where I had to roll one or another back, but if everything is working fine, then Windows did it's job.

Let me parse through speccy. I think you'll want the Intel Matrix Storage manager, but I need to verify that.

I'm heading out for a while, so I'll either post later tonight or tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay, I lost this thread when I cleaned up my active list.

Speccy looks fine, temps are well within operating range (GPU is the highest @ 49 C - but that's normal)
- thanks.

Check your event viewer for any errors or warnings related to cooling / fan / temp
post what you find.

Do you have the UEFI diags installed? Usually on disk named HP_TOOLS (E:/ I think)
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...3674077&softwareitem=ob-59402-1&sw_lang=#N160

Restart the computer and run the UEFI diags (esc, then select or try F2)
Any useful information found there? post it.

I'm trying to find out if it is BIOS or perhaps related to Nvidia - there are reposrts elsewhere

BIOS will be an issue as HP doesn't give you too much access to settings. If that is the case, then you'll have to wait for HP to release a new BIOS.

I'll keep looking.

edit: There have been BIOS updates related to cooling (F.51 & F.53)... sometimes it's advisable to roll back BIOS.
Try F.51 - any help?... no?
try F.53 - any help?... no?
put F.58A back on.

edit: one report states that disabling the mini wireless card and replacing it solved the fan issue. I might try this as a last resort since it involves physically removing the card. The OP replaced the card with an identcial one from Ebay, but removing it should be a sufficient test.

This is a difficult issue to diagnose / resolve since there isn't much HP allows you to do with BIOS.

Thanks Bill for your research.

Unfortunately no success so far.

I have checked the event viewer but nothing there of relevance.

I don't have UEFI diagnostics installed, the BIOS doesn't support this. It just has simple diagnostic tests for memory and hard drive. The HP webpage link to install UEFI diagnostics just takes me to the BIOS page for my computer.

I have tried the earlier BIOS's but they made no difference (I even went back to F.45).

Finally I have just removed the Wireless card. Again, no difference.

I have downloaded the HP Support Assistant. Do you think it's worth giving that a go?

Also, would it be worth trying an earlier version of the NVIDIA driver?

It's odd that the fan runs on full power for exactly 5 minutes at startup or after sleep/hibernation. I have timed it several times and it is literally bang-on 5 minutes when the fan shuts off and returns to normal.

richc72,

Q: I have downloaded the HP Support Assistant. Do you think it's worth giving that a go?
>> A: I never had any luck with HP Assistant, but sure - go it a whirl. Your machine and the issue might provide something useful.

Q: Also, would it be worth trying an earlier version of the NVIDIA driver?
>> A: Sure, but I'd go forward, not backward. see notes below

Check the following services - disable the service if you don't use them (this won't solve the issue, they just caught my eye when I was looking for the NVidia driver version in Speccy)
  • Adobe Active File Monitor V7
  • NVIDIA Update Service Daemon
    (Path: C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA Update Core\daemonu.exe)
Also check task scheduler: Google stuff you probably don't need, but that's your call. The other two tasks I don't know anything about.
  • GoogleUpdateTaskMachineCore
  • GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA
  • CreateChoiceProcessTask
  • SmartDefrag3_Update
Do you use Chrome? Did I already ask this? If no you don't use chrome, uninstall it.

Do you use HP QuickTouch? No - uninstall it.

See what the auto detect features on Intel and Nvidia tell you about the drivers. I've had hit or miss with these, but it's worth a shot.

Nvidia must have changed versioning between 2007 and now. Speccy reports your current driver as:

   Tip
Standard keyboard shortcuts for Copy (Ctrl-C) and Paste (Ctrl-V) shortcuts do not work in Command Prompt.

Enabling the Quick Edit Mode in Command Prompt makes Copy and Paste operations easier.
See step 4 in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/21874-command-prompt-copy-clipboard.html to enable it.

Copy in Command Prompt: highlight the text you want to copy, then press ENTER.
Paste in Command Prompt: right click with your mouse.

Copy the next line and paste it into the elevated Command Prompt window
:note: the command turns off hibernation, test with it off and later if you want to turn hibernation back on, issue the same command with on instead of off.

powercfg -h off

exit and follow the next set of instructions.

I have this problem with one of my systems too (at times). My cure is to put it in sleep mode and then resume from sleep. That stops the fan.
