Laptop fan stopped working

So when I turned on my computer I got this message

"The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss or possible system damage. The system will shutdown in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key now.

System Fan (908)"

The first time I booted up anyways. I saw that the computer was getting very hot and the fan did not seem to work. I downloaded Speed Fan and it did not detect any fans.

I was wondering whether there was anything that could cause this or if I just have to change out the fan (I just don't want to switch the fan and then find out that I had a setting wrong somewhere) I haven't made any major changes to the laptop recently, the only thing that would have changed might be windows update.

Also, if I need to replace the fan, could you guys link some good sites/videos to help me out?

Hi,

Usually you will need to replace the faulty fan (sounds like your CPU fan).

The only other thing is to check the BIOS and see if fans are enabled.
(If this feature is available).

It would help if we had some info as to make and model, motherboard etc:

Please upload your msinfo32.nfo file:

1. Start Menu>Type msinfo32 into the Search programs and files box
2. When it opens, go to File, Save >Save as msinfo32.nfo and save in a place you will remember
3. Let it finish the process of gathering and saving the system info
4. Right click the .nfo file, click send to compressed (zipped) folder>Upload the .zip file here.

Then we should be able to help you with installation etc.

Ok, sorry for the late reply, I was gone for most of saturday.

The fan is enabled in the BIOS.
I uploaded the msinfo file you asked for.

Also, I uesd some compressed air to blow out the fan through the vents on the outside. Now I notice a little bit of air coming out of the vent, but it still overheats really quickly and I'm still getting the message that the fan is not operating correctly.

Let me know what you think I should do.

Your best bet would be to replace the fan. I had the same problem last year with a Fujitsu laptop, and with some Googling, was able to find detailed directions online for doing the replacement. $30 and 30 minutes of cost and work, and the laptop was working as good as new.

Ok, my one question would be whether or not I would have to change out the heatsink too, or just replace the fan.

Sorry...thought I had posted back :shock: Depends, if you can remove the fan from the heatsink with relative ease then I would say just replace then fan, but I would also say to re-apply the thermal paste on the CPU / heatsink.
