Solved Laptop Shortcut Keys Not Showing Volume info etc.

I recently installed some windows 7 updates, and after the reboot I realized the Function shortcut keys were not working perfectly (ie. Fn+F5 for volume up, Fn+F3 to shut off wireless etc.). In other words, they do what they are supposed to, but there is no longer an icon that pops up in the middle of the screen to show how much I'm decreasing the volume. There used to be a volume meter that would show up whenever I used those shortcut keys, but now its gone. All I know its that I'm making the volume decrease or increase, but I can't tell by how much. I searched for drivers for this but to no avail...help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, my laptop is an Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.

Hello, Welcome to Sevenforums!

Try this:

Start Orb>type Service.msc> click on Services>Find Human Interface Devices (HID) and double-click on it. Start status>select Start. Then go to Startup type: set to Automatic. click Apply.

Hope this helps?

I tried this, but it didn't work. I changed the status to "start" and set it to automatic, but still no icons. I can see when the volume is muted on the taskbar, but there used to be an icon that showed up on the middle of the screen. Same with when I switched off wifi, bluetooth... Any other suggestions? thanx

What probably happened is Windows decided it had better/newer drivers to install for your hotkey functions so it installed them, overriding the default ASUS drivers that incorporate the popups you're used to. Head back to the ASUS site and download/reinstall the hotkey drivers for your laptop and you should be good to go.

Thats what I was thinking. However, when I found the drivers for my laptop, there were no drivers for keyboard shortcuts. Here is the list of drivers that are available. Would any of these do the trick possibly..?

Chipset driver, SATA AHCI driver, Intel iAMT driver, Audio driver, card reader driver, rapid start driver, touchpad drivers, vga driver, wireless LAN driver

I looked through the downloads and didn't see anything directly applicable. Under the Applications tab, I saw Launch Manager but I have no idea what that is. Your best bet might be to do a system restore to before you did the updates and then to only apply the security related ones. My guess would be the culprit was in the optional/recommended updates.

Cata thanks alot!! that did the trick! For anyone else who has this problem, when you install the file Cata posted, you will get an error saying you can't transfer all these different files. Just keep clicking "ignore" and it will will work and install just fine...
