Laptop Sleeps during huge update install...

I booted up my laptop this morning and found it was installing some huge Windows update i didn't know it was due to. There are something like 240,000 files to be updated but once it gets to just over 40,000 files updated the laptop goes into what i think is sleep mode (although it could be that it's just crashing - the screen goes black and the power light blinks as if in sleep mode).

This of course stops the update, and once i do a hard reboot the same process occurs again. I have tried several boot options to try to get into Windows so that i can switch off sleep mode (if that is the problem) but when i'm prompted to do a Repair because it recognises Windows didn't boot previously the screen just goes black and nothing happens, when i choose the option of starting with the last known good configuration after a few minutes of 'thinking' i'm just put back into the update cycle and it ends up in sleep mode.

I'm now trying dafe mode so i can maybe go back to a system restore point before the update was even initiated but i have a screen saying "Failure configuring Windows features. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer". But this screen has been up a while and i'm concerned the sleep mode issue will kick in again.

Sorry for the long-winded first post - does anyone have any advice? I'm tearing my hair out!!

From th control panel, click on 'power options'. Set the 'turn off display' and 'put the computer to sleep' to never and save changes. You can always change them back again.

That is of course what i would have done had i ever been able to get into Windows and the update wasn't constantly causing my laptop to hang.

As it is, having persevered and rebooted using various options my laptop seemed to realise the update wasn't working and allowed me to continue to Windows. Complete trial and error got me there in the end.
