laptop slow

My daughter has an acer laptop with windows 7 home premium. It is really slow. She does not appear to have any malware(malwarebytes antiwalware). She uses AVG free and it shows nothing. Her hard drive has more free space than used. What else can I check to help her out?

No one here recommends AVG nor has that I've seen for ten years or more since it bloated up and started causing problems. So first thing I'd uninstall it using the special tool required for bloated AV's and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials to compare the difference.

Work through these steps to Clean Up Factory Bloatware which will also optimize and provide suggestions for what tools and methods work best with Win7, based on tens of thousands of installs we've directly helped with here.
