Have tried both, waiting for the o/s updates and see how they act and installing the latest and greatest as they come out. I think the card I am running isn't all that popular or they haven't sold that many and it may be on the back burner for up dates. I am using the 4850 X2 2gig Sapphire. They make a better (more costly) card in the same line and I haven't had anyone say they are having better luck with it. I continue to use my Nvidia card but I'm looking forward to the 4-display option on my Sapphire.Right now I'm installing 7077 fresh with my Sapphire card in and I will see how the built in's act. Then I will again try the 9.4 if they don't work and if nothing works I'll go back to the Nvidia card and wait for the next set up up-dates. I am pretty old and know something about waiting. The best way to see the necessary drivers go on for an older is to go for the last Vista update available for that series. When the release notes are showing support for the 2xxx models and newer those are referring to the newer designs seen with the chips on the cards themselves being supported having the correct drivers.
When simply tossing any drivers on and still seeing an old card work is mainly due to the generic drivers included in Windows taking over. The best and smart move is not to install any at first with a fresh install of Windows but wait for the updates to show optional hardware updates to allow that to see the correct ones installer.
Or without the catalyst the alternate move is to download the set needed by going through the selection process choosing the model series at the support site. The main reason for not seeing official support goes right back to the newer vpu chips seen on the progress model lines where the drivers/catalysts are written to work with those.
At least AMD covered more model lines then ATI did. With ATI after every 3 or 4 catalyst updates one model line would be dropped entirely! In fact the 9xxx was already history when AMD first bought ATI out. They just picked up from there and started offering support up until Vista
.
Thanks for the information.

I had 7048-68 nice and stable. 7077 not so much. It's even reintroduced the appcrash/freeze with a stuck sound loop from earlier builds
