Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

Status
Not open for further replies.
The best way to see the necessary drivers go on for an older is to go for the last Vista update available for that series. When the release notes are showing support for the 2xxx models and newer those are referring to the newer designs seen with the chips on the cards themselves being supported having the correct drivers.

When simply tossing any drivers on and still seeing an old card work is mainly due to the generic drivers included in Windows taking over. The best and smart move is not to install any at first with a fresh install of Windows but wait for the updates to show optional hardware updates to allow that to see the correct ones installer.

Or without the catalyst the alternate move is to download the set needed by going through the selection process choosing the model series at the support site. The main reason for not seeing official support goes right back to the newer vpu chips seen on the progress model lines where the drivers/catalysts are written to work with those.

At least AMD covered more model lines then ATI did. With ATI after every 3 or 4 catalyst updates one model line would be dropped entirely! In fact the 9xxx was already history when AMD first bought ATI out. They just picked up from there and started offering support up until Vista
.
Have tried both, waiting for the o/s updates and see how they act and installing the latest and greatest as they come out. I think the card I am running isn't all that popular or they haven't sold that many and it may be on the back burner for up dates. I am using the 4850 X2 2gig Sapphire. They make a better (more costly) card in the same line and I haven't had anyone say they are having better luck with it. I continue to use my Nvidia card but I'm looking forward to the 4-display option on my Sapphire.Right now I'm installing 7077 fresh with my Sapphire card in and I will see how the built in's act. Then I will again try the 9.4 if they don't work and if nothing works I'll go back to the Nvidia card and wait for the next set up up-dates. I am pretty old and know something about waiting.
Thanks for the information.

I guess you are running into the same problem with the 9.4 there that I saw with the HD 2600XT model here with the 7.9 at the time. Wait and wait to see the 7.10 and later 7.11 clear that up!

When installing the 9.4 here for the 2600 being an older model everything went well on the 64bit 7077 as well as the two x86 7077s one being a temp install only, and the 32bit 7000. Not one problem seen. And if you go back too far on Catalyst versions those won't work being out before the card itself so any Cat. 8.x update won't do you any good either.

Hello everyone. I've installed Windows 7 on a Dell Inpsiron 6400 with an ATI M54 x1400 graphics card. I cannot set the resolution to 1680x1050 as it was previously. I have installed Catalyst 9.3, but the x1400 is not listed when I attempt to manually install the driver. The x1400 driver from Dell's site also does not work. I am running an Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo 64 bit processor and Windows 7 is also build 7077 and 64 bit.

Any suggestions? Tried to do a driver search without the Catalyst package, but the page told me "AMD no longer supports or provides drivers for older laptops, desktops only blah blah, contact your manufacturer for driver downloads," and Dell has nothing :(

Here's a link to older cat drivers:

ATI Catalyst Drivers Downloads

If you don't want CCC installed, just extract it and manually install the driver only.

If the drivers don't fix the problem, then the issue possibly lies elsewhere.

Even though you have x64 installed, did you try the x32 driver? It may be worth a shot. Then again, it may not

You're kind of stuck there since Dell is not carrying any 64bit drivers for that model laptop. Most of this is due to the fast turnover they have on various newer models seeing those now seeing the Vista 64bit support on them.

Hopefully once 7 is out you will start seeing a bit more 64bit support in general. The better option for the time being however may going to Intel direct since the Dell support site seems to get a famous rep of it's own there!

You're not alone with this problem. If you try running a general search for that model and 64bit drivers watch out for the HTC Wizard Web site since that tries to place a bug or two on your system!

looking throught their drivers ...
i say ATi didnt double check the inf's....:(
Code:
"HD3730" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9598&SUBSYS_30001043
that card will just be named HD3730...
no ati or radeon in that name...:sarc:
heh heh, got it one ;) I had 7048-68 nice and stable. 7077 not so much. It's even reintroduced the appcrash/freeze with a stuck sound loop from earlier builds
it seems that i have had that sound loop in bioshock (it would sometimes go BSOD time [0x00000124 if you want to know] and a update on my realtek driver from 2.20 to 2.21 seemed to lessen the damage to just appcrashes and recoverable (although hard to recover from, i had to build a simple app to taskkill it..:p)

Someone else was wondering why the X1400 drivers were suddenly gone from the ATI.AMD support site until being advised to select the Radeon mobility>Vista 32/64>X1400 then visible at Graphics Drivers & Software

But that still brings you back to square one not seeing any catalyst for the onboard.

hmm, that's coincidence, I get a lot of 0x124 BSOD's with the sound loops as well (and not always with sound loops )

What are you leaning towards, the display driver or the sound driver being at fault? I still think it's probably a sound driver issue.

My three repeat offenders have been:

cmudax3.sys (sound driver - consistent since 6801 quite a few 0x124)

atikmdag.sys (ati driver, obviously :p)

and a new kid on the block -

dxgmm1.sys (I'm not sure if it's part of explorer or directX. Either way this is the most prolific offender)

There's also a few ntkrnlmp.exe which point me nowhere...

OT:

Have you been able to get Seven symbols working properly with Windbg?

I keep getting this:
*** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntkrnlmp.exe -
Loading Kernel Symbols

SRV*C:\Symbols*Symbol information doesn't work and neither did downloading the symbol package

Using Catalyst 9.4 drivers in Win.7.7077 x64 ... BUT

>> Gigabyte GV-R485MC-1GH (ATI 4850) graphics card
>> Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 motherboard
>> Intel Core i7 920 processor

I'm using the Catalyst 9.4 driver and CCC in Win.7.7077 x64 ... BUT ... I played a trick to get them to install properly. Both failed repeated when I just tried to execute the original files, regardless of any compatibility tricks I tried. So I got inventive. I used 7-zip to extract everything from the ATI.amd download files BEFORE I installed and THEN I only installed the program segments I needed -- I did NOT use ATI's installation envelope program:

  1. Download the separate files for the 9.4 driver and the 9.4 Catalyst Control Center. Put each in its own folder.
  2. Use 7-zip to extract all the bits and pieces from within the ATI.amd downloads using the "Extract here" option.
  3. Install the new 9.4 driver first: Go into the ...\$_OUTDIR\Bin64 folder for the DRIVER and execute the setup.exe file.
  4. Next, install the 9.4 Catalyst Control Center: Go into the ...\$_OUTDIR\Bin64 folder for CCC and execute the setup.exe file.
Worked perfectly for me.

hmm, that's coincidence, I get a lot of 0x124 BSOD's with the sound loops as well (and not always with sound loops )

There's also a few ntkrnlmp.exe which point me nowhere...
for me its usually the realtek sys (although it does sometimes lead me to the Ati too, rarely though...)

dxgmms1.sys i presume..:p
It would reffer to DirectX Graphics MMS (i have a few thoughts into this one last abreviation, Multi-Media System but i believe it can be Microsoft Media Server/Services also [but this is still not looking right as MMS has been here for some time and this system file is Win7 exclusive])
although judging from the winsxs description it might have to do with lddm which surprised me as this was originally the WDDM (Longhorn Display Driver Model)..:sarc:)

OT:

Have you been able to get Seven symbols working properly with Windbg?

I keep getting this:
*** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntkrnlmp.exe -
Loading Kernel Symbols

SRV*C:\Symbols*Symbol information doesn't work and neither did downloading the symbol package
its the kernel
NT KeRNeL Multi-Processor
i believe this Kernel is for more than two Processor Cores...
as i have NTKRLPA.exe
NT KeRNeL Physical Address Extensions
yeah remember this is a leaked build and as such dont provide support...
which includes symbols...:(
those are kept in a MS private server somewhere in redmond i presume...
so far the only one that has public symbols is the beta 7000 although it might change as *the* RC1 gets closer....:)

  4. Next, install the 9.4 Catalyst Control Center: Go into the ...\$_OUTDIR\Bin64 folder for CCC and execute the setup.exe file.
Worked perfectly for me.

Good stuff :) Who said installing ATI drivers we a PITA ;)

for me its usually the realtek sys (although it does sometimes lead me to the Ati too, rarely though...)

yep, it's the sound driver that gives me more grief.

dxgmms1.sys i presume..:p

What's an s between friends, lol. Whatever it's function, it's not playing well with others

its the kernel

Yes, but it's frustrating the hell out of me trying work out whats making the kernel cry. Hardware issue, BIOS, chipset drivers, other drivers, etc

I guess I was hoping that since MS released the 7000 symbols, there'd be a little love for all builds.... I guess not :p

They just picked up from there and started offering support up until Vista.

If this message was aimed at me, as i keep saying all i wanted to know was if the 9.4 drivers had dropped support for the older cards. Nothing else.

The 9.4 now seen at the game.amd.com site is listing the 2400s to the latest 4800s there. http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/Catalyst_94_release_notes.pdf

For XP even since the link there was for Vista now seeing a 7 fix in it that shows the same from 2400s and newer. http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/Catalyst_94_release_notes.pdf

The link smarteyball provided earlier for the older catalyts or another site known for carrying old updates would be the option for you there. download from Guru3D.com

Meanwhile that "dxgmm1.sys" is likely from DX11 since no search results turn up on it.

As i said a few posts ago, the best option for my rig is the 9.3 vista for my vista sp2 and 9.3 7 for my 7...

I really don't understand the confusion here, i was never asking what drivers i need, just if the 9.4 had dropped support or not lol...

No offence but it is quite annoying having advice foreced apon you when you have not even asked for it. All this info you keep giving me is irelivant to my question and i really can't even be bothered to check it any more.

There is no way on earth i will take the advice to go back to 7.x or 8.x as i can clearly see an improvment in performance and WEI with the 9.x drivers.

Well I'm glad to see you found the same thing there as I did with 3 separate x86 installetions 1=7000 x86 2=7077 x86 1=7077 x64 where all saw a normal update with the 9.4 where some were having problems with it.

For laptops and desktops alike you wouldn't go for a catalyst but the driver update when strictly using onboard and not a separate card installed. As I was mentioning earlier the release notes will show what model series each catalyst version supports according the information provided by AMD when at the download sites there.

Thanks for all the good advice in this thread. Having just spend the entire day installing, uninstalling, editing infs and generally tearing my hair out, I've come to the conclusion that ATI purposely started sabotaging W7 support for anything pre 2xxx with their latest drivers.

I eventually landed on v9.1 for my x1950pro. It installed first time, with no compatiblity enabled, altered infs or 'CCC then driver' type methods needed, and it scores as high as the WU version when tested.

Such a skeptical outlook, I wouldn't think anyone who wanted to sell their product wouldn't intentionally screw up the drivers. Stupid is what you are looking for, they can't figure it out, don't have the background, or can't find some young crack head that will work cheap enough to do the job. Anyone with that kind of investment shouldn't be second best in a two horse race. Course I am one of the idiots who depended on them trying harder for those out in the world paying the money for their product.
Needliss to say I still haven't gotten any reply from my various emails to the support and tech people of any of the effected companys.

What is seen often is the model series is past it's support life expectancy. With a brand new version of Windows being seen and the age of various models being replaced by newer you can only expect any particular card or onboard chip to see active updates for so long.

This has to do with more then just ATI but an industry wide practice like not seeing Vista drivers available for the main board here at first. Fortunately the chipset manufacturer still offered continued support(NVidia for the nForce chipset and sata controllers) until Asus finally saw Vista 32/64bit updates available.

First i Want To Thank you Brink And All Members here for Contribution to resolve This Problem ..

yeah i found that out a few days ago...
as you can read i was reinstalling 7077 and i found that out...;)
Thanks for all the good advice in this thread.

Good to hear mate. Whether it's on purpose or not, ATI are doing "something" to their drivers  :p
there are some companies that just dont want to let their customers install the Ati software for whatever reason... (or they just plainly left out (as with mine)...:sarc:
@ smarty
it really looks like these drivers werent tested as vigorously as before...:)
although the 9.4 beta were a real charm and did offer me good speed incereases...

Needliss to say I still haven't gotten any reply from my various emails to the support and tech people of any of the effected companys.
wow now that is bad pr if their investors found out that they might be losing business because of bad CS ...:sarc:

yeah exactly...
its the only way they can profit...
innovation is key in almost every part of this industry....
