I've been unchecking all those boxes so long I don't even read them anymore. But wasn't the file shown the installer not the run time exe? It had to be a partial download. The download page for CCleaner lists the installer sized as 3 MB not 1.7.

Wasn't talking about the portable edition on there with no installer. The slim edition with installer at the bottom. Half the size. I doubt it would have even worked properly had it been a partial download of the program.

Where do deleted files go using CCleaner? I know if you delete them normally without CCleaner they are "gone" but still stay on your HD. I plan on deleting 30gb of old music, but I'd like to make sure they're GONE GONE

You are correct. Deleting files in Windows simply removes the file's address but it is still in tact on the HDD. CCleaner will overwrite the files with whatever method you choose fron 1 pass to the 35 pass Gutmann method although not all 35 passes still actually apply to modern HDD's.

For secure deletion I prefer to use the 7 pass Scnheier Algorithm in the Eraser software in that it first applies 2 overwrites and then 5 passes of pseudorandom data which makes the files about as gone gone as they are going to get.

So if I were to delete them using either CCleaner or Eraser, they wouldn't linger and affect my overall Performance, and I could 'overwrite' them with different music?

They shouldn't effect the performance in any case and all overwriting with CCleaner or Eraser will do is make them irretrievable by recovery software, nevertheless they will be written over again should your computer need that disk space.

In layman's terms what does CCleaner do?

It deletes files?
It deletes websites visited? Does it delete passwords for websites?

What if you want to keep your passwords for websites?

Anyway...sorry, I have been reading a bit on this thread and it seems like you all know what it does...I had a quick look at the site linked and I didn't really take in what it does or why it is good...

So if anyone can give me a real accurate but dimmed down description...that's be great...

CCleaner is one of my most favorite software. It will clean up many browser files from IE and Firefox like history, temp internet files, cookies, and many others with one button to click. It is totally configurable.

It also has a registry cleaner to clear out junk.

It also securely deletes (wipe) the recycle bin files for a maximum up 35 passes. Dept of Defense is 3 passes. Each pass overwrites the file into obliteration. You find that in Options > Settings.

It has a easy uninstaller tool for unwanted software as well, much easier that windows.

Yes, you can. While you are customizing the settings, make sure that in the Windows tab, under System, you uncheck Memory Dumps. Sometimes folks get ready to upload their dump files to us and find that they don't have any; Ccleaner deleted them.

In addition to Carl's excellent recommendation I would also like to mention that under CCleaner> Options> Exclusions you can very easily exclude any files on your computer from deletion even files that are in folders that CCleaner cleans by default such as the AppData> Local> Temp folder...

Here I have the two fontconfig files which contain all of the scripts for my Image Management Software exempted from deletion and CCleaner will delete the other temp files in the folder each time it is run, but these files which have an exemption always remain on the computer.

1. Go into options
2. Drag your favorites from column on left to area on the right side.
