Latest Microsoft Updates

Anyone experiencing computer problems after installing latest Microsoft updates? After installing the updates and then opening IE 11 and proceeding to a website, the computer froze. Shut down the computer and then rebooted. The same thing occurred again. Decided to uninstall the updates. Performed the same procedures again. This time the computer opened more quickly and it did not lock up. Then determined to install just two updates: KB3141092 and KB3134814. Logged off and restarted. The computer did not malfunction. All of the above was performed yesterday.

Today it was decided to just install a few of the updates that were uninstalled yesterday to determine which might be causing the lock up problem. The following updates were installed:

KB3122648, KB3127220 and KB3115858

The computer was restarted and IE opened. This time IE was slower in opening, which indicated to me that the lock up might occur. It did. Went back and uninstalled the 3 updates and restarted the computer. Again, everything seems to be functioning as it should. No lock up.

Any comments?

The recent updates I installed yesterday and found that one instance of explorer.exe was using 70% CPU ! I killed the process and loaded explorer again and it was ok as long as I did not open any folders, also the updates wiped out the contents of my flash drive, kept saying it either needed formatting and then scan and repair.

I suspect this was probably the Kernal update and also noticed that there was a patch for the USB problem, installed the patch and it made no difference... Explorer also started to use 100% CPU after that, even once the updates were removed the system did not go back to normal...

In the end I decided to just reinstall windows but upon preparing the desktop it blue screened, after the 3rd failed attempt I had to low level format the drive which took 4 hours to finish then windows installed as normal...

I have not investigated as yet if it was just the Kernal update that buggered everything up or a combination of the others...

So until I find out I am going to avoid all these recent updates.

Whyy did you kill the update process ? That`s a no no and could always cause a problem, and never have a flash drive in unless you`re using it, I know sometimes we forget to pull it. Hopefully you had those files somewhere else . After all, a flash drive is usually used for a backup

No no you misunderstood I did not kill the update process ! after restarting and finding all the problems I had to kill the "instance" / "process" of explorer.exe in order to do anything at all.

The file on the flash drive were Win7 install files from NTlite, no problem got lots of backups of those

I just installed KB 3134814 which said it was an update to IE11. It has now brought back the Windows 10 icon! I did all the patch Tuesday updates yesterday - just the important ones. Of the five optional ones I only checked one (Net framework 4.1.6 or whatever). Saw that IE10 was not supported since January so i downloaded IE11 today and ran windows update. The one popped up - ie kb3134814 and since it installed the Windows 10 icon has reappeared.

So it seems that this update to IE11 installs the icon to get Windows 10. I don't use IE either but tend to keep it updated as Windows Update uses it. I guess I'll have to remove it now - but crikey that's like blackmail. You are supposed to keep your browser updated for security reasons, but doing so brings the Windows 10 icon back!

Just went to uninstall it and it seems it also installed KB3141092 which apparently is supposed to be for Windows 8 (I have Windows 7) - I read somewhere that this particular update is installed by the back door when installing the update for IE11 - so I'm trying uninstalling KB3141092 first to see if the icon goes away.

Will update after restarting.

So I have uninstalled KB3141092 and restarted and the Windows 10 Icon is still there (I haven't had it for months by the way and am careful to avoid the ones that do install it). So now going to uninstall the IE11 update KB3134814.

Ok - I am now writing this from another laptop. After uninstalling KB3134814 my computer is hanging on 'Preparing to configure Windows ......Do not turn off your computer". Been like that for a while now. This laptop I also just installed IE11 but had not yet done the IE11 update KB3134814 and there is no Windows 10 icon and computer working fine, so I've hidden that update (which comes up as an Important one).

Personally I would not advised installing KB3134814 and wish I had left it on IE10. Not only did the Windows 10 icon come back, but my laptop now seems to be frozen/stuck trying to shut down.

I've installed KB3134814 update earlier this week and had no problem (no W10 icon), however I didn't upgrade Internet Explorer from 10 to 11. Sounds like the icon appears when both upgrading to IE11 then installing KB3134814?

P.S. Sometimes it takes awhile to 'configure Windows' after uninstalling the update. Just let it run it's course...

I did the same on one of my Win7 boxes - after the uninstall the reboot clean up took about 45 minutes on an Intel quad core 3.2G / 8GB RAM box.

Let it run, go get a cup of coffee or tea, play ball with the dog then return to see it working again!

Thanks! I read this a bit late and had done a system restore to remove IE11 and the update. I started another thread on it as the icon kept coming back. Despite system restore (twice) I am left with the IE11 update, but am now back on IE10. Every time I now install IE11 (from the Microsoft page) I get the icon back. So I'm staying on IE10 for now - until I have time to sort something as it's a hassle! I don't use Internet Explorer - not sure if it's ok to leave it on IE10 if Windows Update uses it though. But I don't want that icon back! I did try upgrading to Windows 10 and my graphics drivers aren't good with it so rolled back earlier this year.
