I tend to agree that going from a lifetime one to a yearly cost on top of my Kaspersky is a bit more than I am prepared for.
I already have one lifetime one and if I had known this was about to happen would have put on my other machines.
The free seems to be reasonably good in any case.

MBAM lifetime licenses are still available here. I would snap one or more up now before they go away (in fact, I did).

Edit. Can you buy direct from MBAM? You can still get the lifetime version as a download. And it's a slightly better deal, especially if you buy more than one license.

You can probably still get the lifetime license from Malwarebytes, and use the SF link to help support SF.

How can something you have to pay every year for be a steal over something that you pay for once in a lifetime?. With the lifetime license, you paid $75 for three computers...period. With the new pricing, for three computers, you will have to pay $25 every year. It now will cost you $75 every three years instead of only once in a lifetime..

Unfortunately you removed my brief explanation,

3 pc's for 25 bucks is a steal,
They made the only viable choice and fairly traditional compared to other suites matching antivirus licenses per computer,

Expanding I never said it was a better deal than the Pro lifetime license obviously it's not
Upfront costs are down for three computers which is a normal household need,
Viable meaning as a Business model for a growing company choices had to be made,
25 bucks a year is still peanuts for three computers,
Only time will tell if people actually go for the deal or if mbam will drop the price to accommodate for the market demand,

I'm sorry but I still fail to see the relevance of your explanation to the claim it's a steal. Comparing to other antivirus suites is comparing apples and kumquats, especially when there are some excellent freebies out there.

Think of it like this, malwarebytes stated they did not want to provide toolbars or ads in there products-including the free version.
To offset the cost of there company expanding, (and they are-rapidly) you need to think about rising costs. Rising costs = more for the product. It's still a great value, and these guys work hard to constantly upgrade there product and remove malware. They do it because its right, and are not money hungry like a bunch of other companies. Like Symantec for example.

I understand rising costs, doing research on malware takes time. A lot of time.

You must factor all that in. If malwarebytes was greedy, they would indeed throw toolbars and ads into the free malwarebytes to keep it free and to offset costs, as well as raise prices. Instead they are doing something more noble then most companies: Letting the ones who have lifetimes licenses keep getting new features as well as introducing a new price model for new customers. And compared to the steep cost of antivirus software, the new prices are really not that bad.

PS: You don't need to have the paid version anyway, you can just use the free version. The only real difference between the paid and free is the resident protection. No one is forcing you to use the paid. The free is more then sufficient. They could have taken the free away, but instead chose to keep it and let there software keep helping people in all kinds of malware removal forums.

My only concern is they might go to a windows 8 kinda kid look. I hope there interface mainly stays the same, but it looks like its going to change a lot. I loved how simple there interface is. One of the reasons I bought the software was to support them.

The new 2.0 UI is nice, it's not "W8 style", I like it.

V 2.0 dislikes for me
- More popup messages
- The MBAM window opens when I wake the PC, or an Auto scan runs
- Less information in the logs
- Can't run a Silent auto scan
- Can't control which popups to enable, it's all or nothing

-- i.e. For a Scheduled scan, V 2.0 does this:
popup for Scan started
MBAM window opens
popup for Scan ended

I'd like the program run silently and notify:
- if malware or any issues are found
- optionally choose what other alerts I want, such as a DB update

I can learn to live with the 2.0 changes ...
Some people I help will get confused with all the popups and windows opening ...

I'm a senior citizen and most people I help are 70+ years old, often on a limited income, and only have 1 PC.
For these people, the cost will be $25 per year / per PC with the subscription license.

V 2.0 always has MBAM.exe running (and more RAM is used)

FWIW: I saw in the newspaper (yes I still read them) that a company network was phished and the only AV they had on their computers was the free malwarebytes. Makes me mad that for profit companies depend on free products to protect their networks and something tells me that they deserve what it costs them. But their clients were the big losers as their info was compromised.

Rich, the mistake that company made is that Malwarebytes never said they were an AV, it looks for other types of Malware and great if used in conjunction with an AV.

AVs and other anti-malware programs rarely can protect from phishing attacks. Phishing attacks depend on a stupid human clicking on a bad link. Programs like WOT (Web of Trust; some AVs have a similar feature) can warn of known phishing sites but can't protect against the new ones that keep popping up.

I agree businesses should pay for their products, though. What that business was doing was a violation of MBAM's Terms of Service.
