So, I'm late to the party. I was updating my free Malwarebytes software, and what I wound up with was the V3x Premium free trial. Figured I had made a mistake, went looking for the download for the free version, found a lot of information about issues with V3x. Uninstalled V3x.

In this thread, it sounds like a couple of folks are using V3x now with no issues while others have given up on the product - or will when the support for V2x ends.

What I'm trying to figure out is this: at this point, should I risk re-installing the current 3x version of Malwarebytes on my Win7 machine, let the premium trial period expire and let it revert to whatever free version they now support? I can't afford to deal with crashes and blue screens of death and so forth. (I currently have a paid Norton subscription running all the time, and I use the free Malwarebytes software to scan my machine periodically as an added precaution.)

Advice, anyone?

Like you I only use MBAM Free 2.x for periodic (twice weekly in my case) manual scans as a complementary measure in addition to my regular AV program providing constant protection (in my case it's MSE).

I've seen various concerns over MBAM 3.x and am not particularly liking the way that Malwarebytes are buying up all the complementary products and incorporating them into a "One size fits all" product. Where security is concerned, I have an aversion to putting all my eggs in one basket, as it were.

I currently propose to continue with MBAM Free 2.x for as long as it is supported with definition updates, withdrawal of other support in terms of adding new features etc doesn't concern me so long as the definitions are maintained. On the other hand, I'm also willing to see the arguments for and against MBAM Free 3.x before making any final decision.

I also use MBAE which is proving rather flaky these days as it goes through periods of not always booting up when the computer is switched on and this has been raised on several occasions on their forum without any real recognition or solution. It all leads me to wonder whether Malwarebytes hasn't lost its way at some point in the last year or two, and I may well end up looking at other products altogether.

I've been using v3 since the earliest betas and I never had a blue screen. All of the bugs I experienced had to do with the functioning of features and did not cause system instability. I have v3 installed on four systems and all of the features work reliably for me in the latest version.

Shortly after I downgraded to V3, the Malware Protection module refused to start after a reboot until I closed MBAM and restarted it. I increased the interval between the bad starts by delaying the tray application at start up by 30 seconds. The last update was supposed to fix that (dreamers).

I think that definition updates are compatible with all versions as I recall, and certainly I was still receiving the usual definition updates for version 1.75 until I switched to version 2.x long after the EOL date - you may recall our discussing it here as I only upgraded to version 2.x in January this year (but was still getting definition updates for 1.75 at that time).

I appreciate, however, that they are not guaranteed to issue definition updates after the EOL date, so it is a question of establishing now whether it is generally recommended to upgrade to version 3.x or to switch to a different product (and if so, which).

I assume version 3.x is available as a free manual scanner which is how I would intend to use it as with the previous versions?

I assume version 3.x is available as a free manual scanner which is how I would intend to use it as with the previous versions?

I could not find a 'free' 3x download that was different from the download that launches a free trial of Premium Malwarebytes for 14 days. I can't recall the exact information about what happens when the trial period ends, although I have the impression that the software can be converted to a free version if you don't subscribe to the paid one.

I have a backup laptop - Win 7 32-bit Dell - on which I have Malwarebytes installed, so I may upgrade it to 3x and run it awhile to see if I have issues before I risk installing it on my primary machine. Or I may just use other tools - Norton, Super Anti-Spyware, or others suggested in this forum.

Again, advice is welcome :p

As I understand it, for a long time Malwarebytes was viewed as an excellent anti-virus tool and was frequently recommended - hence this sticky thread. Recently, the software has been updated and the new versions may have issues.

You'll want take your time browsing this forum to see the many different recommendations about various tools in addition to this one, and then you'll need to decide what you think will be best for you.

OK, I've sorted it out. It's not supposed to replace an anti-virus program according to MB faq. It's meaning is to supplement it. So I understand it's stickied here because it deserve(s/d) it. Fair enough. Thanks for your help.

Just to provide an update on this. Malwarebytes have officially stated:-

"Yes you can keep v2, however its really not supported any longer, however it does still get database updates."

That's from Post 2 here:-

Dont want 3.* - Malwarebytes 3 - Malwarebytes Forums

Incidentally, I do find it frustrating that it isn't possible just to download the free version 3.x without having to go through the rigmarole of a 14 day trial with all the extra features whether you want them or not.
