Layered Security

Got a question about devising a layered security approach...

I have ESET Smart Security 5 and wanted to know if anyone knows of other defenses that can also be installed and used so that if something slips past ESET, something else would catch it. Almost looking for something that would run full time alongside ESET (but would not conflict with ESET if that's even possible) Although nothing is 100%, ESET has been very good to me and my PC and have stopped a number of things here and there.

1) Norton DNS: https://dns.norton.com/dnsweb/dnsForHome.do It's free, filters out bad URLs, is compatible with all AVs and takes no system resources.

2) Sanboxie: Sandboxie - Sandbox software for application isolation and secure Web browsing It's free (although a lifetime license is available that has a few more features) and is compatible with all AVs. Sandboxie will place your browser in a virtual sandbox making your system almost bullet proof from online threats. It takes a little bit of time to get used to it, but there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that will help you learn fairly quickly........ But be warned, once you get used to it, you'll want to dump your AV altogether.

3) Novirusthanks EXE Radar Free/Pro: NoVirusThanks EXE Radar Pro - NoVirusThanks They offer a free and paid version (lifetime license). It is an anti-executable that prevents .exe's from running unless you alow them once, or whitelist them forever. It is very easy to learn, and takes few system resources.

4) Hitman Pro & Malwarebytes: HitmanPro 3 - SurfRight Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download Both are free on demand scanners and are considered among the best available.

Good suggestions there.

Run everything you don't trust in a sandbox and a supplementary scan with Malwarebytes can't hurt.

I personally only own ESET Nod32 and it's been great! I also have Windows Defender running for some reason. I'm not entirely too sure if they work well alongside each other as this is a newly imaged machine following a horrid HDD failure

I thought about turning on Windows Defender with ESET but didn't know if they would clash or how effective Windows Defender even is. Can it slow down your PC with a running AV installed running all the time?

To be perfectly honest, I don't feel it to be slower than before (previous installation with Defender turned off).

I will have to try the system with WD on and ESET running like normal. A while back before I switched to ESET, I had a horrible virus hit my PC and had Kaspersky protecting it. I sent the virus over to Kaspersky and they said it was not malicious when in fact it totaled my PC. ESET, according to VirusTotal at the time, did detect it as a PUP (potentially unwanted program/application). Since switching to ESET, it has helped me out a lot, but at the same time, I want something that I can have a layered approach with so that if something gets through layer A, it can hopefully get stopped by layer B or C and so on.

I am definitely checking out the downloads too as mentioned above. They look good!
