I have already contacted steam support, been a month and no actual help.

I have posted a question on steam forums: Left 4 Dead 2 Will not start - Steam Users' Forums - I have already posted all the information here.

But seeing the crash report it must be something to do with the pc not steam ? I'm not the only one. Obviously they should release an update to get round this problem.

What's this about?

Steam will not back it up, it will always stop at a certain point, no errors just the eta which was almost done rises and never progresses. Also like I said im sure it will not allow me to anyway because it isn't linked to my account - so that idea is out. Thanks though.

It needs to be linked with Steam so they can update their clients they have a crap load of mods and simply put you need to have it synced with Steam for it to work properly

After you get it linked with steam i would go to local files and do a verify cache integrity

He didn't say it wasn't linked to steam, he said it wasn't linked to his account. You might also check the steam thread he started...

Drew thanks for the heads up Steam has been having issues with servers just going down anyway
What i don't understand is how the game isn't linked to steam as it installs the client Pre game

One question did you activate Steam Cloud ?

Tommy the way I read it, and it's entirely possible, is that the account or game may not be his. It doesn't mean the game itself isn't linked to Steam.

And yes, being a Valve game, it most definitely has to have Steam installed to work. No getting around that one (well there are hacks, but...).

Anyway based on some of his troubleshooting, the game has to be installed on Steam on else some of them couldn't be accomplished.... verify cache integrity which he said he did.

Still.... there needs to be some type of clarification of what he means when he says the game isn't linked to his account. Or perhaps I'm missing something

The game IS MINE lol. Like I said in the linked steam question, I got it from the steam store when it was for free. But surely if that was the problem it would say its not linked to my account ?

I've never heard of steam cloud solarstarshines.

look on your Left4dead menu it will give you options

Best thing for you to do is to delete the game and re download i feel that will correct it all the way

seems like that would be the best and smart thing to do since it isn't saving at all could be a host of corrupt files

Heapsize: Is heapsize greater than 1.5 GB? Is it specified in the Launch Options?

Heapsize Setting: Modify the heapsize command to allocate 50% of the RAM you have in your computer in bytes.
1GB -heapsize 524288
2GB -heapsize 1048576
3GB+ -heapsize 1572864
Since L4D2 is a 32-bit application it is believed to be capped at a maximum of 3GB of RAM. Setting heapsize to a value beyond this may crash the game.

Perhaps you need to dig in there, in the Local Files tab and hit Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

What you can do, in my case a couple years ago when I couldn't upload screenshots to Steam, is delete everything, except: steam.exe, SteamApps. Then double-click steam.exe, where it will download a new copy of the client, or update it, if a new update is available. From there, it does require that you re-enter your Steam Login, and if you have Steam Guard enabled, then you should have Gmail / Hotmail / Yahoo, etc. or another mail client open to intercept it so that you can enter a code word.
If you lost access to any of it, then you're out of the game. You can't reset your password, NOPE.AVI.


Of course, you could go the uninstall, restart, reinstall route, but this may require a bit of registry cleaning, using CCleaner.

The Steam installer comes in a Windows Installer (MSI) package. Right click on it and select to uninstall it. This only works if the program is already installed. You may have to use the Programs and Features menu to remove it there. After you've restarted, run the MSI package to reinstall Steam back.

When was the last time you checked for errors on your drives? Or, at least a security check?

Also, most games need a paging file to run, so would it kill to stick an 80GB spin-drive in there?
You'll also need to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic, and MemTest86+ to check for failing memory.

Do you still have the dump from the last crash? This looks like a common segmentation fault.

If you look to my steam forum post you will see I have already done that.

Im quite sure my components are not at fault, every other game works I have on steam. As do any other program/game on my pc.

Did you install ADD-On support ?

Honestly sounds like a firewall or virus program is blocking you if you are using MBAM TURN IT OFF
