Let's face it: Windows 7 copies files slower than Vista

This is my first complain thread, everything else I love about Windows 7. The look, the performance, the compatibility, etc. However, numerous people have said that copying files takes much longer and it's true from what I am seeing. I wanted to copy 4gb of information on a UBB and it took more than one hour. Before, it was probably under the 30 minute mark. I don't know if this problem occurs when copying and moving files that are already on the computer but it surely takes really long when copying things from external storage devices.

Do many of you experience the same issues?

Do you think this is an easy fix for Microsoft?

When do you think this problem will be solved?

EDIT: From the replies this topic has been getting, it seems that people using Nehalem are the only ones that got performance gains.

Send them feedback on it so they will fix it by the time 7 is finalized.

i find that too. but even if that remains in the original retail release, i'm sold. i was wondering since the next big thing for ms is cloud computing, weither it did not recieve the emphasis that we still for the present time still need.

There doesn't seem to be any problem with mine. Here is my transfer speed during copying 7.47 GB of data (folders and files) from my external USB HDD to the internal HDD.

I have also used Fedora, Suse, Ubuntu Linux
And all other Windows from 95 to date except ME
I transfer files more quickly, so its not a case for everyone. I've especially heard disk performance improvements for those with SSDs

I'm curious, do you know if this problem has been reported by others, since you asked the question "When do you think this problem will be solved?"

If you haven't seen this reported as a problem, then I agree with Airbot, report the problem. MS won't know it is a problem without your feedback. My experience on file transfer has been a good one. I have not complaints myself.

Does anyone have some benchmarks on this - copying files?

I wonder if you had a SSD Drive - would W7 be faster than Vista with the same drive - since it is memory based?

i'll qualify that comment i made. it is slower copying files to another partition on the same unit, or to another platform, wired as well as certainly wireless. doesnt seem to matter whether target machine is xp, vista or another win7 unit. stats have submitted.

I noticed a definite slowdown in file operations over the network. I have several computers I use at once. The one I sit in front of as my interface to what is basically a home cluster. Win7 can take as much as a minute or totally hang when trying to perform file ops over the network. It's become so much of a pain I've resorted to using the Remote Desktop app when I need to work with files on another computer.

And yes, feedback sent. :)

I disagree.

From what it looks like, some people are not having the same issues as some of us are. The only way we could figure out why some people are having slow downs and some speed ups is by actually testing... But this is definitely interesting. :sarc:

For the people that are seeing performance gains, are you perhaps using SSD's, Raid setups, or something else that's uncommon for the regular user? Are you using Nehalem setups?

EDIT: After looking at the system specs of you guys most of the people that are experiencing performance gains use Nehalem. Interesting...

Slightly off-topic

It's kind of funny if you take a close look: File-Copy/Move wasn't really nice in XP, in Vista they messed it up (frist, at least - getting better with SPs); now it seems to be the same in W7. What's so hard about this function?

I'm using Killcopy since back on XP and it works fine on Vista & W7. It's so much more efficient, handy and free. So why don't the Microsoft-programmers just let them be inspired by the tools from others?

Options like

  • Skip this file and continue
  • Retry, if it fails again skip
  • Pause/Continue process
  • Continue copy/move after crash
  • Parallel read/write
  • Speed-Limit
  • Reserve Space before copy/move
  • Verify copy
  • Shutdown after copy/move
  • ...

seem to be rocket science to Microsoft. It's bin in Killcopy for years.

For those who want to try:
KillCopy

...don't panic about the URL, the programmer IS russian :p

:geek:: Download and set the Vista-Skin at once - the default one is extremely ugly.
