Libraries auto-shared through media streaming?

I havent been able to figure this out. For other PCs on the network via workgroup, I've gotten my "Public" folders to be shared and nothing else. That's just the way I want it, and its the way I had everything set up on vista.

With Media Streaming however, it seems I don't have a choice... its all or nothing? My Ps3 identifies my media server just fine, but it sees EVERYTHING in my libraries, which isn't what I want. I want it to be able to see my Public folders only, like the workgroup. There are no ways to customize this from what I can see, the only option to change thing is based on retarded ideas like 'rated stars' and 'parental controls' instead of FOLDERS.

Are there any choices here? From what I can gather, if I dont want them shared via media streaming... I have to remove them from my libraries entirely. Which would be wasting a neat/core 7 feature, imo.

Moved to networking I see, sorry thought it was better suited for library/wmp12 discussion as its not really a problem with the network!

Best thing to do is turn off Homegroup. Other PC's on your network can still stream without access to your Libraries. You can configure who has access in Media Streaming Options.

Homegroup is already off, and I'm having no problems restricting other PCs on the network via sharing.

The problem is with media streaming to other devices, there are no configuration options. Either libraries, or not. Unless im missing something, in which case point me in the right direction.

The only method I have seen to control what is shared via Homegroup is during the setup you can decide not to share any or all of the standard libraries,

you could try setting up a homegroup and disabling all the libraries and see if this solves the issue.

I don't think you guys are understanding what I'm asking, so sorry if Im not being clear. Homegroup/network sharing is not the issue. I have that customized fine so that other PCs can see exactly what I want. The problem lies with media streaming, to devices, specifically in this case my playstation 3. Homegroup is irrelevant for this as it only can be used by other desktops running Windows 7.. which obviously any device that isnt a PC doesnt.

For these devices, you have to use a Media Server like WMP or other downloaded software. In Vista, when set up properly, you could share all your shared folders with these devices. This is how I liked it, as it allowed all devices to have the same access to my shared folders as other PCs on the network. In 7, the media server in WMP12 automatically shares all your libraries, even if thats not what you're sharing to your network. I can't figure out how to change this (if you even can). The only workaround I can find is to only put my shared folders in the various libraries, which is a complete waste of the feature.

Sorry for any confusion :)

You are able to customize the WMP media libraries, although I believe that if you leave them at default then they will share just the items in relevant system libraries

In WMP right click on one of the libraries and you should have an entry for "manage libraries" by selecting this you can either add extra locations to the default or remove the default completely and start from scratch

Thats what I said, but that also edits the library outside of windows media player.

I still want to use the Library feature, for reasons outside of WMP/media streaming. Its convenient. If I want to find something that I dont remember where it is/what its named(random picture named a date for instance), I open one folder instead of 5-10.

Is there no way to have folders be included in the Library, but NOT shared along with others to devices on the network?

Hi the only way I can see to do that is to totally remove the library from the WMP Include list and then build a totally separate set of includes for the media library.

My default for music for example is two entries Music and public music the Music entry shares the complete contents of the system music library. If you remove this entry you should be able to manually build a set of includes that contains exactly what you require shared - some of which can be items in the system library or not as you decide. The downside of this is of course that you have to maintain the two lists separately

This may explain my thinking ....

Where is this WMP include list to chose which libraries you want to include? That might not be a bad workaround, though kindof silly that I cant just pick which folders~

In WMP library view click on organise and then manage libraries

WMP LIB.PNG

you can either choose to add additional items to the list or remove the default entry for the library first and add just those folders you want to stream.

Well again, as stated in the original post that is the same as editing the system libraries. Aka: not using the Library feature at all, and only including public folders.

So then there is no way to share specific library folders.

Hi,

As my question is exactly the same as Celeras has posted, I may as well revive this thread.

Fingers crossed there is some fresh thought or a solution to this simple (you would have thought) problem and there is not the hole in functionality that I fear.

TIA
Graham
