Solved Links don't work in any pdfs I download

Hi,

I tried searching online for a solution but I only get results aimed at people making their own pdfs.

I am trying to open links in pdfs from pther people.

And in most cases, the cursor doesn't even change. It still looks like a text cursor. And even when it changes to a pointing hand, the link still doesn't work.

I kept thinking it was the producers' faults, but is it my computer or Adobe Reader.

Rather than suggest another reader, can Adobe Reader be made to link properly first?

I always keep Adobe Reader updated.

For a test, create a PDF document with a hyperlink yourself - e.g. with Word. Then check whether that works with Adobe. Then you will at least know whether that is an Adobe problem or a problem with the PDF docs you receive.

Thanks, but I already did that. The problem is with ALL pdfs I receive and make. I download a LOT of pdfs for my work.

Like I said some links are not even clickable.

And some let me click them, but when I click Allow in the security box, nothing happens.

So it is an Adobe problem. Sorry I cannot help you there. I use Foxit since many years. Never liked Adobe.

I use The Portable Freeware Collection - PDF-XChange Viewer its free & works perfectly & fully customisable.

Thanks, but that didn't work either. I guess I'll have to DL another reader.

Can you upload one of the PDFs that you're having problems with to see if I can follow the links.

I just downloaded PDF-XChange Viewer that Roderunner suggested and on every link when I clicked Allow it came up with:

"Error [operating system]"

I had a feeling it was Windows 7 causing it, not Adobe.

So what do I do now please?

Check the .pdf filetype association here: Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations. Maybe that is the problem.

You most likely WILL be able to open the links. Everyone on my course can. I can't share any with you, sorry, as they are for work.

That's why I suspected it was Windows 7 on my machine causing it, and my last post details how this is confirmed: Other pdf viewers cannot open the links either.

Right click any .pdf file, select open with, then browse to the readers location. I keep my pdf reader in root of C: drive.

I did that, but it still did not work.

It opened the file ok but still cannot open the links.

Have you tried it with your firewall disabled ? What AV program do you use, it might include web control. What is your default browser?

There is a security setting that disables/enables the links.

I added red below. I think it also disables hyerlinks also.

With Adobe Reader Protected Mode enabled (it will be by default), all operations required by Adobe Reader to display the PDF file to the user are run in a very restricted manner inside a confined environment, the “sandbox.” Should Adobe Reader need to perform an action that is not permitted in the sandboxed environment, such as writing to the user’s temporary folder or launching an attachment inside a PDF file using an external application (e.g. Microsoft Word), those requests are funneled through a “broker process,” which has a strict set of policies for what is allowed and disallowed to prevent access to dangerous functionality.

I read the first link and did the instructions in the 2nd link you gave and although the fix Adobe gives isn't the screen I got, I still found a way to disable protected mode.

So it's sorted - thanks a lot.
