From said article:

Steve Ballmer of Microsoft estimates Linux's share of desktop users to be higher than the web stats suggest. In a speech to investors in February 2009, Ballmer presented a slide based on Microsoft's research: it shows Linux's share of business and home PCs about the same as Apple's (Which is approximately 6%).

I would further point out that Microsoft is dropping support for XP which accounts for more than 50% of the os usage and that leaves Microsoft with active/supported usage of 35.51%.....this is moving backwards you have to admit. You can't count those XP users as current Microsoft supporters as Microsoft is leaving them behind and even writing software that is NOT compatible with this OS (Thinking IE-9 in case you are wondering).

I don't want you to think I am an anti Microsoft troll so I will point out that this post is using Win7 Ult. on my main desktop and that I also run Win7 pro, Win7 HP, XP pro and XP home. I am still playing (however seriously) with Ubuntu Linux as shown in my previous post. One can never allow oneself to become to complacent or cease to learn...this is the path to senility.

@ Bobtran : agreed.
There are a lot of users still working on XP. MS should make some arrangement either to shift those users to win vista or 7 or try making compatible or native applications to xp as well .Sp4 for xp would be problem solver ;)Windows is going the linux way to drop support of OS but they need to think that OS release cycle of Linux is way to fast than windows and that makes the difference. win xp has been in the market for so many years. i cant be wiped out in 1 day !

Possibly the reason for dropping XP support is that its 10 years old... But in saying that, my car is 23 years old and I still support it... In saying that, Im sick of them, and driving them both into the ground just to have an excuse for new ones.
So I'l be keeping whatever PC I've got win7 on, but moving XP onto Ubuntu 9.10.
Tried 10.4, dont like it just yet.

I can't wait for MS to drop support for XP, it finally means I can get rid of my XP Laptop which I only ever use to troubleshoot OTHER PEOPLES PROBLEMS (not on this forum, I work in Tech Support).

Three things could happen:

a. I am more in demand because there's no MS support and I make lots of money or

b. Everyone migrates to Seven and is problem free or

c. Everyone migrates to Seven and don't understand how to use it and it's business as usual.

There has to be a cut off point somewhere along the line, I mean if MS continued to support 95 until 2005 then far fewer people would have upgraded to 98, 2000 or XP.

Oh and I use Fedora because of its colour scheme ;).

Well, I too will continue to use Windows 7 as well....but only on one machine as the software can get a bit expensive... For other machines and when I want a break from Microsoft, I've got Linux to fall back on.

I have crunchbang running on my girlfriends eeepc, I have dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 and Win7 both 64bit. Ubuntu is better than Win7 in every way except the battery life, almost 2hrs less running Ubuntu.

I have found that I can have all the good features of Win7 in Ubuntu, plus all the things I wish Win7 could do I can do in Ubuntu. Yes it takes a bit of learning but no more than switching to a Mac. I don'y have to worry about antivirus, malware, un wanted updates, limited control, etc. It's also FREE! easy to use and can be run from a live cd! Linux in various forms has helped me overcome Windows crashes, running a live cd means completed file access of the Windows so you can back up, copy files without worrying about admin rights.

I am using windows 7 less and less, now only using for PS CS5 as I can not get on with Gimp. This does not stop me supporting sites like this and helping friends and family with there Windows issues.

I have wasted way too many days over the past 2 decades in trying to "get" Linux. I still don't "get" it...my last install of Ubuntu lasted the longest but eventually it blew itself up too.

Linux is so exhausting with nothing of substance in return.

I'm sorry to hear that your journey and experiences have been disappointing with the product.

My experiences, especially those over the last 5 years have been very positive and solid. It's helped that I have also had laptops with very cooperative wireless network chipsets as well. My desktops with NIC cards themselves have been a piece of cake. I'm pretty much as comfortable setting up a Linux desktop as a Windows desktop these years. And once the Linux box is running, there is very, very little in terms of ongoing maintenance to keep it running that way.

I usually have 1 gaming type more powerful machine at home running Windows that I can use for my tricky hardware. For my other 2-3 boxes...they usually just run Linux as it's free, stable, fast, nearly bulletproof and pretty light on resources.

Actually, a few days ago I was reading another forum. Some kid was getting grumps at "why there are so many different versions of linux??", and why the developers "cant make up their minds and just stick to one!!"
I went through a hectic registration process just so I could reply... then as I was doing so, I realised the post was from 2006... :o

I've met several people that has the same idea as that person few weeks ago... Back then, I'd preach'em... now, I'm like "whatever... :)". Because I know, Distro X can be made to run like Distro Y, they are essentially the same... Just packed differently..:o

That price of $30 for Snow Leopard is a bit misleading. If you didn't have any copy yet of Apple and had to go retail, it's $169 for the Mac Box Set...that's the full install.

The Windows 7 Professional Upgrade price is $199.

Of course that $169 price tag does get you extra software as well and is only aimed at 10.4 Tiger users.

Apple don't want you to know this but the $30 and the $169 disks are identical (bar iLife and iWork which come on separate disks anyway) and you can in fact (but you're not supposed to) upgrade from Tiger straight to Snow Leopard for 30 bucks.

Because there is no product key on these products an upgrade and a full version are just titles and mean absolutely nothing.

And of course you never would need to buy a full copy of OS X in theory (unless your hard drive crashes or you upgrade your HDD) because all Macs come with it preinstalled.
