What's frustrating is that I do not know whether this problem is ONLY Windows 7,
or also related to my hardware ( Toshiba ). What I do know is that recently I did
update Toshiba software ( after being invited to do so )
and this problem started AROUND then.

( And it may seem a trivial problem, but I get annoyed when the 'Personalization' of my machine
is NOT done by me PERSONALLY. )

Anyway, now when I switch on my machine and it boots up, along with the 'Welcome' screen
I get a picture of myself as the named user. To proceed I have to click once,
which is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY as far as I am concerned and only helps to wear out
my clicker. As far as I can see under 'Personalization', the only option I have here is whether or not
to have a password ( which I decline ). How do I remove this picture of myself ? Thanks.

If you are the only user on the PC then you might want to check to see if another user was added. you can check in the Users control panel where you click on manage other users. there should only be your user and the disabled guest account listed. I remember seeing this a lot with XP, it was usually related to Client Services for Netware being installed under network connections. It might be a similar type problem with the Toshiba update.

From that link :

If you only have one user account that is not password protected on the computer,
then Windows 7 will automatically log on to that account at startup.

Yes, I only have one user account, in my own name, and as far as I know it has NEVER had a password.
I do NOT share my machine, mainly because everybody else in this residence is a TECHNOPHOBE.

To REquote part of that link :

Windows 7 will automatically log on to that account at startup.

Except that it does NOT, for me. What it does say, in effect, is :
"OK if we login THIS guy ( the ONLY user besides Administrator ) ?"

Lobby,

That's under default conditions. If anything was ever changed with the password or login, then it would no longer apply.

You could still use the tutorial I posted to set Windows to log in to your account automatically at startup.

Wow, yes, that did work, thank you very much.

That said, I do feel stoopid for the fact that ORIGINALLY I only saw
the part of that webpage that I actually quoted, completely MISSING the instructions
on what to do.

The OTHER thing that happened to me recently was that the ipconfig command stopped working.
Turned out the PATH environment variable had somehow got reset.

The fact that both these problems happened more or less simultaneously
means that I blame Toshiba.

And thanks for the welcome to the forum. The solved problem certainly feels welcoming.
