Long black screen on UAC popups and system startup

Hello there. I have an HP dv9700 notebook, which about an year ago began having serious screen problems. It went black and nothing made it come back, even though Windows still booted (sounds came up and everything).

After almost an year repairing, and 3 Intel motherboards later, the technician found out the problem was on the dedicated graphics card memory, and put an AMD motherboard on my notebook which didn't have dedicated graphics memory anymore.

So now my notebook is recogniozed by HP automatic product detection as a dv9010us one. Plus, my graphics card is now shown as a GeForce Go 6150 (I bought it as a GeForce 6800 GS).

Well, I installed Windows 7 Professional on it, and as soon as I downloaded the first batch of updates (and the graphics card one got updated as well so I went to the native screen resolution), I got a small bugging thing: everytime UAC gets called upon, the quick black screen that appears before the popup asking if you'll block the application or not actually becomes a really long one on my notebook. It takes about 5 to 7 seconds to come back to the regular screen, before and after the popup appears.

That thing also happens, for example, after I type my user password on the Windows welcome screen. I hear the welcome sound, but the screen is still black for some 5 seconds until my desktop appears.

It might not be a huge problem, but it really bugs the hell outta me waiting those seconds everytime UAC pops up. And let's face it, it does quite a big while, especially when the system is new and you gotta install lots of programs.

I sincerely have no idea what that's about, since I use Windows 7 on another notebook and a desktop with Intel graphics cards, and noticed no problems with it. The black screen on both devices are pretty quick (less than a second long).

I have tried finding out drivers for that graphics card, or trying automatic detections, but nothing ever worked. Windows says my current drivers are the latest ones, so I have to appeal to you guys knowledge to help me out here.

Hi ghnogueira,

You can disable the desktop dimming on that machine.

Down near the clock on on taskbar, click the Flag and go Open Action Center, On the top left sidebar of the Action Center you'll see "Change User Account Control Settings" with a small shield.


When you open it, you'll be presented with this Window:


Moving the slider down by one notch will only disable desktop dimming and is the recommended solution if the dimming takes a long time

But do you know why it acts like that on my machine?

And do I get any "less protected" from an UAC point of view by sliding down a notch like I did?

Older Video Cards and Drivers are just incapable of handling the animations efficiently forcing Windows to use Software rendering, thats the only cause of the delay.

Your not really less-protected, the desktop dimming just prevents an aplication from faking the UAC dialog but it would first need to get onto your PC todo that and thats where Anti-Virus should be doing its job. Ive always disabled the desktop dimming since Vista since it gets in the way of my work allot, I haven't found it less secure

So I guess that means although I am free of the long waiting time when the UAC popups comes, I am not free when they happen at the system login and logout.

Same symptoms, different problem...

I found this post in my search for answers and I'm hoping that y'all might be able to help me out.

I'm having exactly the same problem, but with two critical differences. I have a very powerful machine, and UAC hasn't always done this.

Because I'm running a powerful machine, I have a difficult time believing that it would be forcing software rendering (unless it's forcing wrongly, for some reason; is there a way to check?), not to mention the fact that I feel like software rendering would still be pretty fast.

Secondly, the UAC prompt used to be really fast (one of the things I have really loved about Win7, esp over Vista). I built this computer recently, and the first few days after I loaded Win7 on it, UAC was as fast as it was on my old machine (which is still fast, BTW). After a few days (maybe a week), UAC suddenly started taking 5-7 seconds to dim the screen and bring up the dialog, and the another 5-7 seconds to return after I clicked "yes."

During those few days, I was installing software that I've been using for a long time, none of which has caused this kind of problem before. None of it is weird or low-level stuff. Games, office programs, Blender (a 3D package), anti-virus, etc.
