Long shut down time

Applied the this script to solve lengthy time to shutdown W7. Not one iota of difference it made. It takes the same amount of time to shutdown. When you think about it a value of 10000 or 1000 makes no difference at all when you convert it to actual time.

Hi,

What is lengthy time for you?

As you can see it made a difference to most who use it as it did for me for 5 years.

Maybe there is another issue that we can try to find.

I'm sorry pal, didn't mean to be critical. It's just frustrating to be searching for a needle in a haystack in the dark.

Are we talking about windows 7 or something else? what's with the 5 years reference? My windows XP used to shut down instantly without any tweaks ( instantly = under 6 seconds). Now, with windows 7 (clean install and 5.7 experience index rated) it's over 3 minutes on a good day. There is absolutely no problems reported during the shut down process and I make sure to close all items in tray before shutting down including Kaspersky 2010 internet security and logging off.

Checked all logs and events. Nada. No hung or stubborn service whatsover.

So my question is what exactly is windows 7 doing for 3 minutes after you direct it to shut down?

Yeah the five years ment XP also. The tweak speeds up shutdown of services and running apps and forces shutdown. Now it seems that there is something that won't terminate.

Can you type MSconfig and tell me what you see in startup.

We'll start with that and I'll have the post sent to general area so it can have a larger audience since I work and can't always reply fast.

Kaspersky? Oh, dear God... Nevermind...

There must be something else in there. Are you trying to tell me that all you installed in Windows 7 is the anti-virus and JAVA? Is this a fresh installation of Win7? Also, this may be a hardware issue. I used to have an old HDD that ran on ATA, basic Win7 operations were quite slow (including shutdown).

Thanks, Zardoc. It's worth bearing this in mind if you are experiencing overly long shutdowns. The main reason for this option is to remove any trace of activity from the drive if you are dealing with classified/confidential information (as is the case with some businesses). However, the bigger the paging file the longer this takes. For most people, and virtually all home users, there is no need for the paging file to be erased on shutdown.

Hi all
just to add my .02EUR worth

in addition to the advice given above you should also see what system services are running -- for example if you have ACRONIS / ADOBE etc.

These will have background services running all the time whether these programs are active or not. Some of these programs initiate system services automatically which all add to the shutdown time when you are closing windows down.

Many of these only need to start when you launch the application.

Other things like data streaming servers, itunes etc etc might also have long running services that take a long time to stop.

Cheers
jimbo

Dwarf - I have been messing about with one thing and another to try to prevent UNBELIEVABLY long shutdown. I just used to walk away and leave it, which was annoying when it was just a reboot needed. The tweak on WaitFor.. from 1000 to 20000 was useless, as this is just a question of a few seconds.

As soon as I saw your reference to clearing VM, I knew it had to be right as I have 12GB of memory and clearing VM was going to take ages. Switched it off as you showed, and now my computer reboots withing 2 minutes. Thanks a bunch.:)
