Which is the best virus scan software / looking for new virus scan
Virus scan software falls prey to product life cycles and by nature of the constantly changing threat landscape, one software in particular can never be perfect. I would suggest making a purchasing agreement with one vendor to keep the costs down and in addition, use a host of tools to periodically check your systems.

I would not use a free version. Always pay for a subscription to give an added layer of accountability and, of course, full functionality. On the other hand, it is in Microsoft’s best interest to secure their systems as best as possible, so I would use their free product. I would not use some 3rd party free product because one has to question their insentive to providing a product for free. Corporate interests for providing their free software, may trump the interests of the end user.

Most large organizations sign agreements with McAffee or Symantec. However, I have noticed they do not always detect, quarantine, and remove everything. That being said, I find that AVG does a very good job at times, but at other times Symantec or Avast may perform better. The ability to perform accurate threat detection, quarantine, and remedy are constantly being challenged by the evolving landscape and multitude of attack vectors. I would set a schedule and cycle through using these tools as well:

The best AV is COMMON SENSE and I heard it was free. If you know where to look for it.;)
But common sense cannot protect you against a website that you frequent that has been compromised. It cannot protect you against a DNS exploit that sends you to a fake website that looks just like the original. Common sense cannot necessarily protect you against a known website that ends up with a malicious ad. While common sense certainly does help, it's not a guaranteed solution that is failsafe.

A common sense recommendation that I would make is to NOT search the web and click through links for sites that offer hacked copies of the Windows operating system, or other pirated software. Don't go looking for serial number or key generator sites. Don't go scouring the web for pictures of the latest naked celebrity leaks. Honestly, if you stay away from these things, I'd say nearly 90% of problems just go away.

But that's all that some of us want, or require. I know for me it is. I don't need a whole protection suite as I'm very careful to not put myself into risky situations.

I would of gone with Vipre Premium, lower price, and just as good if not better protection.

I've heard good stuff about Vipre, although I prefer BitDefender and ESET...I might try Vipre someday.

In my experience, relying on one product for all your needs is kind of a no-no for me. I have MSE on my laptop in tandem with Malwarebytes. You got one realtime scanner, and one manual scanner for everything else.
