i have had norton antivirus for over 2 years now and to be honest it works very well, but the main problem is the fact that i can only have it on a single pc, otherwise i have to spend like $100 more to put it on all my pcs which is a huge rip off

are there any antivirus programs that work well and that i can put on all my pcs for a single payment?

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on all the computers in my home. It has always ran well, and best of all, its 100% free for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users.

Hi, monster528.

ESET has multi-computer coverage -- for a fee. When you split the cost among several PC's it is quite reasonable, particularly the 2-year, three computer program. See ESET Smart Security - Internet Firewall, Antivirus, Antispam

For opinions on antivirus programs see What's the Best Anti-Malware?.

If you're interested in free-for-personal-use antivirus programs, I recommend checking the following:

avast! 5 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Microsoft Security Essentials

Most companies will charge $80 or more for more then one pc. For two systems VIPRE's $40 per machine was $80 with the $120 option for unlimited pcs. I should have spend the extra $40 then since the unlimited would have also covered dual booting different versions.

I recently have gotten into a security craze, after a lot of research (and personal experience now) I find there is a 3 program combination that is amazing- Like many people have already said, MSE is the first I'd recommend, which that by it's self is a very good AV. If you want to go one step further, Malwarebytes is a program that specializes in... well... Malware! Lol. The last thing I recommend is the COMODO firewall. These three things work in harmony together for amazing protection. A bit of advice, I don't know for sure, but a lot of firewalls start to misbehave if you have more than one active at the same time, so I'd disable the Windows firewall.

awesome guys thanks. do these programs work very well? i mean i have had norton for like 3 or 4 years and have always been able to remove and block all the viruses i have ever had.

does avg and MSE have auto protection?

also when i download a file and its infected norton is able to automatically remove the file. thats the most important for me cuz i ALWAYS download files, like constantly

AVG and MSE both have real-time (auto) protection, but AVG isn't very good these days. I'd definitely go with MSE or Avira free if I were you. MSE has an option where you can right-click a file and an option to scan it with MSE appears. I use it all the time for downloaded files. I'm not sure if Avira has the context menu entry or not.

I ran AVG(free editions) but still found adding a second spyware remover program was often needed to catch the data miners and other bugs that didn't sound off alarms with AVG and even Avast when that one was tried.

Lately I've had the full version of VIPRE Premium so far doing a great job here of finding and removing at first hidden bugs in old zip file downloads for XP lingering as well as the firewall blocking scam sites as welll any that would drop a bug on you.

While many add Malwarebytes on I found Spyware Terminator tracked more data minors and use that on the second Vista install(dual boot with 64bit 7 host) not having gone for the unlimited license and not able to activate VIPRE again. That offers a Crawler IE toolbar as an option for filtering sites as well as a free version of Clam av and have to wonder if anyone knows how well that av is since not having tried it.

Multiple layers is always the end results once you see something slip past your av program however. I have yet to see one as I was saying before offer a 100% guaranty nothing can get through. HAR! Don't be fooled! Different programs are simply better at catching certain things.

Avast 5 and MSE ( like the scan with feature) I use both for now and also have malwarebytes. So far with due diligence no problems. Common sense goes a long way as well. I really wish Avast would get boot scan finished for 64 bit they say it's on it's way so we'll see it's a great feature IMO. Fabe

It's never so much which programs but what which programs will do especially when layering levels of protection. The updated av programs at this are starting to include things like adware/spyware sweepers with some also adding rootkit protections. Getting behind an effective firewall is another plus if you presenlty lack one.

Norton and McAfee have too large a footprint, and they want to include too much stuff to make it a complete package. When Peter Norton sold his product in the early days it was good and efficient, Symantec had over complicated it. Its too much processing power operating in the background. In any event for malware protection you need more than one trick up your sleeve. I would use security essentials or avg - and not loaded use the free malwarebytes or superantispyware, just in reserve to scan when needed.
