Solved looking for a way to send video thu emails

Hello everyone,

I am looking for an easy way to send videos thru email.

I have a 60BG movie i made quickly with my dash cam and wish to send it thru email, but it seems to large to go.

I tried uploading it to YouTube so I could just offer a link, but it seemed to take forever and it never did upload.

I tried using a compressed folder, but that did not work either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I often send movie files via dropbox. The free version gets you 2GB storage. You upload the file to your public folder and mail the link. I usually split the file into smaller chunks with winrar for reassembly at the other end. Not sure what you mean by 60BG movie - if you mean 60GB, then compress the file (mp4 etc).

In any case you'll have to upload it to somewhere. 60GB will take a certain amount of time depending on your line speed. Youtube is usually relatively fast but it also depends on the filetype. I think .avi is slow. .mp4 or .flv are better suited, but with .flv you lose some quality.

Other good options are dropbox as jed said or Skydrive.

I was kinda hoping '60GB' was a typo - 2 hours of HDTV is a fraction of that. YouTube have a time limit - I think its 15 minutes max per clip. They also chew your movie ie lower the quality.

I tried drop box, i have it with my Yahoo mail, but it just kept loading with never finishing.

And I checked my 4 min video, it is only MB not GB sorry!! Hope this did not screw anyone up trying to help me!! 60.6mb

I'm not sure how DropBox works with Yahoo mail, but I have the app installed and just drop a file into the Dropbox folder and it uploads fairly quickly. You've got to consider what your upload speed is. I'm on fiber so I get around 5-10 Mbps uploading to DropBox. Your 60MB file would transfer in 1-2 minutes for me. If you are on adsl with low download speed of say 5Mbps, the up speed would be about 0.5 and that file could take anything up to 15+ minutes to upload.

since 1 byte = 8 bits, the math is

60MB = 480 Mbits
if upload speed is 0.5Mbps -
number of seconds = 480/0.5 = 960 secs = 16 mins minimum

Yea, I guess drop box would be the way to go for me. Seems like the best solution. On my Yahoo, when I click on the paperclip icon to attach a file drop box is an option I can choose to select if I have a large file. I tried this, but it never finished loading the video, so maybe i am doing something wrong but am not sure what.

Wow! 60GB. That's huge. You will not be able to send it via email as the free mail servers do have size limit whereas online file sharing services have the same limitations.

The file is 60MB not 60GB. That's not big for a movie file. Perhaps if MetalMan228 gave his internet speed that would help. Try this;

OK, I did some research and supposedly dropbox is now integrated with yahoo mail, but it does not seem to be working properly.

I am posting a screenshot of what dropbox is doing (or not doing) on my PC.

Then I went and downloaded dropbox from the web thinking that would help, but it still does not seem to be working. When i click on the dropbox icon it loads a dialog box that seems to spin continously but never does anything else.

I am looking for other dropbox user feedback as to what the &^%$ I am doing wrong.

With normal Dropbox use you download the app and install. Then you drop a file into the public folder on your pc. This folder is mirrored at DropBox. When upload is done you right click the taskbar icon and go to the Dropbox website. There you copy the public link to clipboard and paste that link into your email. Bear in mind that the cloud folder is a mirror and if you remove the file from the dropbox folder on your pc, it is removed from the online storage also.

edit - according to this you have to upload files to dropbox first, and also have linked Yahoo to dropbox

I have not seen the link box that is described in your link. Maybe that is the problem, but i am unsure how the "linking" process works.

I went and manually moved my video into my drop box folder and then tried my yahoo mail again and all i get is the same spinning dialog box. I cannot seem to use the dropbox either from it being part of Yahoo or from me downloading and installing it manually on my PC.

So something is wrong somewhere here.

My dropbox will not upload anything. The screenshot I posted is all dropbox will do, period.

I manually moved my video into the yahoo folder of my dropbox but it still does nothing.

With Dropbox actually installed and running ie logged in, what happens when you drop a file into the Dropbox public folder? You should something like my screen shot - file has blue circle whilst uploading then green tick when done.

Ok, Yes I did notice a green check mark.

But I still cannot get drop box to work with yahoo for some reason.

After loading the file into dropbox and now knowing I have the green check I go to yahoo and use a drop down box and click share from dropbox but nothing happens.

OK if you click the Dropbox icon in taskbar then click share link, the url will be copied to your clip board. Then ctrl-V ie paste the link into your email.



or click dropbox link, go to website and copy link from there

Alright, i see that and understand it. So correct me then, I am not putting the whole file into my yahoo email to send it? I am just including a link to let the other person view the file?

When i click on view my clipboard it takes me to dropbox where the video is uploaded and it wants me to add an email address to let others view the video.

I am just looking for a way to send large files and/or videos inside my email so others can just click on it and view it just like a picture. This seems like a large pain in the butt. Unless the email I send has the link to view inside it also

If not, then why is there a dropdown box ON my yahoo to use dropbox?

According to what i read Yahoo uses dropbox already. Nothing I read stated i needed to INSTALL dropbox to use it with Yahoo.
