I wouldn't pay $400! Tiger Direct has full OEM version for $135, Home Premium for $89.

MS appears to be hiding the full and Upgrade retail versions of their only successful OS, perhaps to cut down on support load since OEM doesn't include it.

I would avoid Amazon for buying software. They have been know to unwittingly sell counterfeits since they often get their software from dodgy sources. Even worse are their Marketplace vendors which, apparently, Amazon doesn't vet very well. That is the story with this one. Also, the price they are asking is much too high by well over $100; I wouldn't trust a company that gouges like that.

NewEgg is a safer place to get software from. They still have Win 7 Pro OEM. While OEM is not as desirable as retail, it's all that is available from safe sources anymore now.

Win 7 was M$'s only successful OS? What about XP? Granted, Win 7 has been M$'s most successful OS so far but XP was the most successful OS until Win 7 eventually passed it up (and it didn't happen overnight by any stretch).

It is their only successful OS now which should be available for purchase. XP remained on sale after Win7 was released.

What's happening here is that they are ignoring consumer demand in the face of overwhelming rejection of Win8. As a measure, nearly every single new PC consumer review on Best Buy rages against it.

MS appears to be focused on their new Apple business plan to vend Social Media style apps from a phone GUI which no one wants on a MS OS. They feel they can ride out the storm. A lot will depend on the new CEO with Bill Gates heading the search committee, but may be having trouble finding one. With strong rejection of Office 13/365 and Surface, Xbox may remain their only successful product unless changes are made soon.

Give new PC owners a Win7 Upgrade kit like was done for Vista. Sell Win7 retail copies proudly. If MS doesn't want to support it, send them here to Win7 HQ.

It will be the only current one starting 04/08/2014 but that will never change the fact it was successful.

I have not seen it for weeks. I think they may have stopped shipping it. It's an appalling miscalculation, and they must know it.

Unless M$ decides to release it again (highly unlikely), for all practical purposes, Win 7 retail is gone. OEM is the only safe option anyone has left for anyone wanting to buy Win 7.

True, technically, you cannot transfer OEM to another PC. Some people have managed to convince M$ to make an exception for them by claiming to be replacing the MOBO in their PC, but that is highly unethical. It's also been rumored that M$ has been tightening up on making that exception.

There are a few places still advertising Win 7 Retail packages for sale but buying from them is very risky since those copies have a high probability of being counterfeits or they are being sold by speculators that are jacking the prices to obscene amounts.

Please, please, please don't get them from fleabay. That's the most popular place to sell counterfeits. Sealed doesn't mean a thing. Anyone can make their own security stickers and heat seal boxes.

Thanks for the heads up. On an OEM version that I install myself. Will it say OEM somewhere on the computer, like when you right click on Computer and click on Properties?

Yes, it will have "OEM" in the Product ID visible in System Properties.

Havoc, remember this, you are buying a key when you get oem, yes you get a disc too, but that`s not so important, you can always make your own install dvd. The key has to be legitimate and work.
