Yesterday I moved around some files of photo's and had a general tidy up of my laptop and after doing so decided to run a defrag - it took 11 passes and now I have lost half of my photo files!!! Any clue if I might be able to find them - I have checked all user files and recycle bin to no avail.

my concern is that - my daughter uploaded new photos a couple of hours before I ran the disk defrag and the files that are missing contain the photo's she uploaded (I know I should have maybe backed them up 1st but....!)

Is there a way to check when the last system restore point was created?

It will show when you run the system restore.

Hi

First you could use Everything. its Fast and better than Windows Search. if you know the file name enter it here or you could also use Wildcard like *.jpg or *.png etc ..... this will show a list of all the files matching those extension.

If on the other hand your files are deleted.... and you havent't used your system much after that, then you can use Recuva to retrieve most of your files...

Do these and let me know what you find

There was no point in doing a system restore as the restore points were before latest photo's were imported and after defragging when they had gone - it also says that it would have any effect on missing files and photo's.

So I tried searching again to no avail and then downloaded Recuva which could find nothing on my laptop so I tried it on the memory card in the camera. I believe I found the photo's on there but no preview was available although it did say most were excellent and recoverable. I recovered 55 of these photo's but..... I can't open the files now they show in photo viewer but not with a preview - if I double click on them I get a black screen saying it doesnt support this format or I need an update (it is fully updated!) so I guess unless anyone has any more suggestions I will just resign myself to the fact I have lost these photo's :(

Hi

Could you post the files here as per this.

As far as I know defraging doesn't delete files.. Either this could be the due to a virus/malware infection... or something else...

Try running a chkdsk in a command prompt to see if it finds errors with the drive. Don't use any of the switches to repair yet, just see what the check reports and post a screenshot of the reult.

hmm

Could you post the System logs saved directly from eventviewer as the one you send me is only till 12 June 2012

I do see from your Application logs thats you have schedule Windows Backup.... could you try checking your files there.

Thirdly... could you tell me the approx date and time you did the transfer of the photo as well as the defrag....

I saved the system log from the eventviewer but when I tried to upload it I got :Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing.
If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you received this error.

How do I get around this?

The windows backup - I backup to external harddrive and was last done on the 26th July - the photo's I have lost were not uploaded until the 2nd August - defrag was started at 9.38pm on 2nd August (photo's were uploaded only a few hours before this)

@F5ing - don't want to sound too dumb but how do I run chkdsk?

Click on the Start button, type cmd, click on cmd.exe. A command prompt window appears. Type chkdsk and then press enter. Post that resulting screenshot (using the Snipping Tool on your PC and upload via the paperclip icon that you see here when you create/edit a forum post).

How many drives to you have on the computer, and what are the drive letters associated each?
