Lost the My Documents folder when trying to move location

Hi All

I know this topic has come up before but answers seem to lie with changing the registery which I'm not comfortable with

I just got a new PC with Windows 7 on it (that's what I had before and I like it).

This new PC has 2 internal drives - 'C' with everything on it right now and 'D' which is NTSF and empty (Dell PC and Dell installed drives).

I wanted to move My Documents, My Music and My Pictures to the 'D' drive. Simple to follow the instructions - NO. I right clicked, chose 'Location' tab, pointed to the 'D' drive and now the My Documents folder is gone. Disappeared from the PC by the looks of it. I did a search to see where it might have gone and nothing comes up. I have not touched the My Music and My Pictues folders.

My Documents folder was under 'C'\Users\Barb

Does anyone know where it might have gone, how to get it back and what do I do now, without having to go into the registry.

And it's not nice to mess with Windows' system folders. Windows expects to find them in ONE place and only that ONE place.

So you screwed up....use System Restore to go back to before you made the 'Grande BooBoo'. And, don't do that again. Eh?

I just leave those folders where Windows put them, and then create identical folders on my D: (Storage) drive, as my backup area. I just use a simple batch file to copy everything from C:\My Documents to D:\My Documents. I use the /s switch to make sure that all the sub-directories get copied too.

Hello Barb,

It sounds like you made "D" your new "My Documents" folder since you didn't move it to "D:\My Documents" instead.

You can run the shell command below in Run (Win+R) to open your "My Documents" folder at its current location to help find it.

:ar: shell:personal

You can use step 4 in Option 2 of the tutorial below to restore the default location of your "My Documents" folder, then copy the contents back to it.
