Loud Fan Noise if using Utorrent and Media Center.

Hey Guys, I have a HTPC that I use only for Media Center and Utorrent. Most times when I am using it it makes loud noises. I think it's the fan trying to cool it down. The case is open and it has pretty decent specs. I don't know what else to do.

If you're using a program that is for transcoding and encoding, that you downloaded, those programs are CPU intensive.
CPU heats up, PC gets hotter and the fans kick in.

And people can stop with the malware comments etc - it's a tired argument. After literally thousands of torrents, I have never been infected - not once. If you listen to the naysayers, I should be a walking virus factory...

And yeah, torrents are also used for legitimate purposes :sarc:

µtorrent uses bugger all CPU so your biggest culprit here is most likely media center. The fan is ramping up under load. I assume it's stock?

Is the PC noisy when only one of the two apps is running? Or is the PC noisy just running µtorrent?

I don't want to go too far OT, or be disrespectful, because you have lots more experience than me for sure, but not everyone is as well informed or skilled at knowing where to go and what to look for when using them. So do you have any suggestions for the rest of us that will help us to avoid any potential problems with torrents?

First step:
You can open task manager and see what process is taking up much CPU cycles when the fan starts. Identify the program which is causing it.

Install CoreTemp and see the CPU temperatures at this condition.

You say the case is open and well ventilated... Which fan is kicking in.... CPU fan or Case fan. If it is case fan and making lots of noise when working, you can as well disconnect it (Case is open and there is fresh flow of air). Try to keep the system in a well ventilated area, (not in a cramped space which obstructs air flow and causes problems). Or replace the fan with a new one which is silent.

If it is CPU fan, check the heat sink of the CPU and see whether it is choked with dust (reason being open case). Clean the Heatsink with compressed air and a brush. The CPU fan kicks in during intense CPU cycles when there is'nt enough air flow through heat sink, causing the sensor to start the CPU fan. The CPU fan also should be silent when operating. If it is making lots of noise (due to wear and tear), better replace it.

One more possibility is the SMPS (power supply) fan. If the SMPS becomes old and the fan is worn out, this also makes lots of noise. Better replace the SMPS if it is so. Also look for any loose parts in the case. They may add up to the fan noise by increasing the vibrations. Tighten all the screws in the case. Sometimes this works.....

That's correct I don't know much about them except many get infected with them. You haven't got infected yet using it and that is a good thing.

I regards to torrents, I have just 1 simple, question.

If its being used for legit reason, why not just go to the official site and get it there via direct download, rather than torrent which is often slow and then seed it for a long period of time.

I do know a few places offer thier goods via torrent or direct DL, and direct is almost always faster.
Just seems to me theres really no incentive to use it, even for legit reasons.

Have you tried the previous suggestion?
Stop the torrent app, and start MC. Does it still do it with just MC running?

As far as the noise.. is it a fan spinning up or HD? Or can you tell?
Look at the HD activity light and see if its staying on if not sure.

One possiblity could be a large collection which has not completely been indexed into the library.
Maybe thats part of it. If this is the case, just leave it alone for a few minutes and it should fix itself soon.
