Loudness Equalization - Wheres the settings button??

In this picture, you can see a settings button for the Loudness Equalization enhancement. When I go to the enhancement tab, there is no settings option (or "Preview" or "Restore Defaults"). Why is this? I wanted to see what the "Release time" option does, and I can't get to it.

Also, while I'm here, I was wondering if there was a way I could "tweak" loudness equalization. I want to make low/quiet sounds louder, but I don't want to reduce the volume of louder sounds. Is this possible? I've been googling for ~2hrs and I came across the Release time setting, and I was gonna mess with it, but it's missing.

No settings available... unfortunately!

It looks like MS has licensed some of the "Waves" DSP technology, pretty high end software... part of the L-series Maximizer. It's a combination Limiter/Compressor and I think they figured the general public wouldn't know how to set it up. Too bad, it could use a litttle tweaking, the attack is a little slow.

i'm not sure if you can really blame microsoft here - i think the culprit here is your soundchip hardware and driver.

if you want more features, you're going to need better hardware.

Well, hmmm.. Since DSP compressors/limiters are affected by input volume you can try turning your application's volume lower and your system's master volume higher.

So, let's say you're using WMP to play a DVD and have it's volume set at 80% and your system volume at 50%.

Try WMP at 30 or 40% with the system volume at full. Since the peaks coming out of WMP will be less, Loudness Equalization will not react to them as much while still bringing up the softer sounds.

These are the types of controls that should be available in L.E.

There is one "gotcha" some applications volume controls are post processing, L.E. will not have any effect on them.

Also, I was mistaken, I said Microsoft had licensed Waves L-Maximizer, from looking at the registry it looks like they've licensed Waves MaxxAudio which is a suite of audio tools.
