low disk space after recovery

Hi everyone,

my first time, so I hope I'm on the right part of the forum.

I had to recover my system following an overnight system crash - don't really know what happened. Following my windows 7 re-install I started getting messages about low disk space. Looking at my disk space I have this:

Recovery(C:) 20Mb free of 14.6Gb - nearly all of this is taken by windows

OS(D:) 243GB free of 284Gb - I have some downloads on there but also another copy of Windows 7

Essentially my C drive, which seems to be far too small is full with Windows 7 and becoming constantly full. My D drive has all the capacity I need but isn't much use in day to day running

Any suggestions, please? If anybody can help and needs more info then I'll try to get it asap

Thank You

Clive

Welcome Clive

You may be able to free space by deleting the shadow copies.

My computer>right clikc on c drive>properrties>disc clean up, be sure to check the box including system files, lower left. Do it twice. Do it once more without the box checked. Total 3 times. I have found when there is a lot to remove it may take more than on try.

If you turn off your system restore then turn it back o, you will lose all your restore points, but you will regain all that space.

Thanks richc,

I'm not too literate on these things - what are the shadow copies? is the c drive copy a shadow? I thought that it was kept on the c drive.

I've done that and re-started just for good measure and now have 325MB free so thanks!

Should my C drive really have only 14.6 GB and be nearly filled with Windows 7 though? This seems to be a long term issue with this set up.

When I re-start by the way I get the Boot-Manager screen which offers me Windows 7 twice, which also seems wrong

Thanks for your help so far

Clive

Clive, quick question for you, which copy of windows is your sister using (C or D?). and which drive is all her stuff on?

You have to free up some of the space on D and give it to C. You are using just about the right amount of space for Windows 7, so we cannot increase the available space there.

Severed solo - I Think it's the C drive that's using Windows - it's that drive that is filling up, but my C drive is labelled recovery and my D drive OS. I am, to be honest, confused by this

RichC - How do I do this please? freeing from D and giving to C would solve everything!

Severed solo - I'm afraid I can't at the moment as I'm on my work laptop, not the one that is causing the problems. I'll see if I can do this later but I'm not at home at the moment.

Im sorry cbomf forget i said anything :) I just realised it is going to be absolutely no help at all because the idea i had won't work in your case as you have no space on C

Of course if you want to post the screenshot anyway it could come in handy later

No problem, thanks for the effort - quite why my drive capacities are set the way they are is beyond me - I've now got 325Mb free which is a working minimum from what I gather. Re-partitioning seems the only option and that means backing everything up first.
