Hey guys, i switched from xp to w7 a while ago and i restarted working on a model i began on when i was in xp and i notice there's a really frustrating fps drop in both 3ds max and mudbox, which makes it quite hard to work. Do you know what can i do to get more fps in w7 or if it's possible?

My rig is
nvidia 9500gt 1gb ddr2
4 gb ddr2 ram
intel core 2 quad 2.4 ghz
windows 7 x86

Thnx

If you have an older version of these programs, it's possible that they may not be optimized to run either in Aero or in DirectX 10/11. How old are your versions of 3DS Max and Mudbox?

They're both 2009, but i tried to disable aero and still haven't got much performance, just a slight improvement in mudbox.

Do you have the absolute latest WHQL video card drivers from NVIDIA's website?

Maybe you should see the forums maintained by Autodesk:

The Area :: Discussions

I get the impression that you shouldn't lose much by going from XP to Win7, but I have no personal experience with 3DS Max.

I'm sure that Autodesk would be pleased to sell you an upgrade to the 2011 version, which is officially supported under Win7.

Ok, i downloaded 3ds max/mudbox 2011 trials and still i got the same performances. Maybe it's from my computer, maybe it's too weak to run these programs in w7, i don't know :-/ .

I've ran 3ds on my system with half the memory and half the cpu power.. It is kinda sluggish for me (but it's to be expected with my CPU & RAM) but I think your's should cope with alot more ease.

Have you tried playing with the driver settings in 3ds Max's preferences?

  1. Start 3ds Max.
  2. From the Customize menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Open the Viewports panel and check the Current Installed Driver.
  4. Make sure you have 3ds Max configured for the software display driver.
  5. Click OK to close the Graphic Driver Setup dialog. You will be informed that you have to restart 3ds Max for the change to take effect.
  6. Close the Preferences dialog and exit 3ds Max.
  7. Restart 3ds Max.
(Instructions taken from this Autodesk page because I havn't re-installed 3ds just yet, the page may include some other tips which might help your situation too.)

Another idea would be to make sure that you have installed all the updates and service packs for it which can be found here. (each update needs to be installed, not just the latest one.)

Turning off Aero is a must for me whilst using 3ds Max, the more you can give it the better I say. :)
