Macrium PE system backup changed Vol. letter?

Hi...I am not that experienced with system backups.
I used to do system clone backups on my XP
I am using an HP Pavilion Win 7 64 bit.

I just used free Macrium Reflect as suggested and created at PE to do the image at bootup.
I noticed that it changed the System vol. to "H". My computer has it as "F".
The other 2 volumes - Vol. C: HP NTFS and Vol. D: Factory Image. (which I have recently read here and MS that I can delete it - intending soon after this backup - if that doesn't create any additional problems - its nearly filled up and I dislike those persistent error messages - sorry to change the subject for a moment)

My question - will that be a problem if I have to do a restore?
If it does, how would I change it back since it is a Macrium Image?

Can you rewrite that?

Will what be a problem?

What are you trying to back up? Your Windows installation only? Or?

If you are trying to back up only your Windows installation, you need to make an image of the partition on which Windows is installed---regardless of the drive letter you may see.

You also would need to back up your "System Reserved" partition if you have one.

I use Macrium and the letters changing does happen often. It is not a problem. Macrium just does not read them correctly. You need to go by the names that the drives are called, not the letters. When it restores, you will be fine. I just downloaded the latest version of Macrium and the letters did not change. You might try the new version. At any rate, it does not matter. Just go by the names and you are OK.

The drive letter changed by free Macrium from D: factory image to F: factory image, along with the other 2 partitions, will restore properly and not hangup on me if I ever needed to use it. I'm somewhat new to backing up and with free Macrium.

I wondered if that deletion would create an error as well. Mine is getting full so I thought of preventing that error message.

No problem about the questions, that is why we are here. == The Factory Image partition is so you can restore your PC as it was when you got it out of the box. You might need that one day so I would not delete it. You say it is getting full. Are you putting any files on it? What is making it full? It should not get bigger. It would not affect your boot disk, but you could not restore to factory condition if you got a virus. Where are you putting the Macrium Images that you are making?

"Factory Image partition". Is that the exact name? Or are you referring to a recovery partition?

A "recovery" partition is meant to restore your PC to factory specifications. Those discs you apparently made should also restore you to factory specs, although the discs aren't as reliable as the partition---if you have such a partition.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "Factory Image partition".

If the occupied space in this partition is changing, as you imply, that implies to me that it is NOT a traditional "recovery partition", but something else, possibly peculiar to HP computers?

Images can be made by Windows itself or by separate software such as Macrium Reflect. Perhaps this "Factory Image partition" is a place where images made by some type of HP software are stored?

Or are you deliberately saving some type of files to this "Factory Image partition"?

More detail needed.

Ideally, post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management so we can see what is going on.

I made a PDF file of it. I read of several comments regarding the HP Factory Image.
Maybe others might be interested in these step-by-step instructions from HP Support.

What did you ask them as far as "changing the settings"? What are you changing? Can you give us a brief rundown of what the PDF says?

There are 4 pages with several images.
I noticed some of it is slightly different then the instructions.
With Windows Explorer I can see the 'D: Factory Image' partition.
Start > Right-click Computer > Properties > System Protection.
I'm to check and see if D: Factory Image is checked...C: 'on' D: 'off'
So I have to move to the next step...which I on't be able to do until tomarrow...I have to leave in a few minutes...unless some change occurs.


I, then have to allow the 'hidden' folders and files and then use Windows Explorer.
Double click on 'D: Recovery'
Delete any files there...if you put files there and files (restore(?)) has put there.
Delete folder with the same name as the computer name in the Recovery (D partition.

Do not delete essential items: RECOVERY, $RECYCLE.BIN, boot, hp, PC-Doctor, pcdr, or PRELOAD!

Besides I wouldn't someone that knows what he's doing to check it out for me.
I am not very confident with any of this stuff. I haven't as yet changed to be able to read the 'hidden' files which is the first thing in order to see the files and folders in the 'D:Recovery' partition

What "settings" are you trying to change?

It's generally a bad idea to mess with it and I'm not sure what that document from HP is intended to do.

In case you or anyone else that might be interested in removing the Factory Image error aggravation. Or to fix it before the drive is full.
I have that 1st set of instructions on a PDF - if anyone is interested.
They gave me a 2nd set of step-by-step instructions which I copy/past here.
Towards the end I became a little confused looking for 'organize' tab (upper left of screen) I have very little experience at troubleshooting. So what do you expect.

I succeeded in cleaning out my 'D: Factory Image' partition.
But, I had use HPs alternative step-by-step instructions

In order to resolve this issue please perform the steps that are mentioned below:

1. Click on start and then computer.

2. Select D ; drive and open it.

3. Select “Organize”.

4. Click on “Folder and search options”.

5. Click on “View” tab.

6. Put a checkmark next to “show hidden files and folders”.

7. Uncheck box beside options “hide extension for known file types”, “Hide protected operating system files”.

8. Click on apply and ok.

9. Now please select “Preload” and press “Shift+Del” to remove this.

10. It should resolve the issue.
