Macrium Question

This weekend I moved my Docs from a SSD that also had my Win 7 to a SSD for only my Docs. I was going to do a Macrium image restore to the new SSD but ran into a problem since the image wanted to restore to the original location. There was a solution on Macrium by Dragging and Dropping but I could never get that to work. I instead did a Copy and Paste from one SSD to the other. The new Macrium Image made after the Copy and Paste is smaller than the one made at the original location. Everything appears to be all there but I am not convinced. == Two questions -- Is a Copy and Paste reliable? And if anyone knows how to do the Drag and Drop in Macrium, I would appreciate a few hints on it as I still have the images from the original location. Thanks,

Mack I don't know if this would work but what about cloning the second drive from the first drive and then deleting everything you don't need from the second drive.

You can do that with Macrium and it really doesn't takes long .

Another way is to copy the entire Documents in one drive and paste it to the drive you want them in - have done that on a number of occasions too with no problems plus pics as well.

The copy and paste is what I did and it appears to be OK. What concerned me was that when I made the Macrium Image of the new drive, it was 3 GB smaller than the Image of the old drive. It just seems strange, that is all.

I stand to be corrected Mack but Macrium dumps the temp stuff so the image always appears smaller than the original, and in fact my images are that way too.
But like I said I do stand to be corrected on that.

Hmmmmm.................I'd want to get to the bottom of that as I've never heard of that problem. I assume you mean you could not choose to restore to the partition of your choice.

Macrium is made so that it restores to the original location by default. There is a way to restore to another location, but I tried and could not do it. The instructions were kind of vague. I did the Copy and Paste and things are OK.

There is no error message. It shows the destination as the original location. Go down the page a bit on this link v5: How to restore a backup image (Restore, v5) to "Modifying the Restored Partition Properties" It talks about restoring to a different position, but I couldn't get it to work.

I'd never previously seen that tutorial. I just looked at it.

As I understand it, you had a new SSD and wanted to restore your system image (image of C) to it.

From the looks of that tutorial, you should go directly to the lower portion "restoring a system image". A paragraph there begins with this:

"Note: If you are restoring your system Image or whole hard drive Image (which includes system partitions) to a new Hard drive then don’t follow this tutorial. When restoring system Image to a new hard drive: remove old hard drive and install new hard drive then boot computer with Windows PE rescue media (CD or USB) (or use Linux rescue CD) and use the rescue media to restore. See separate Video/tutorial for details."

Is that what you did? I assume this would be the correct choice.

Or did you follow the tutorial you linked, including "Modify the restored partition properties"? I assume this would be the wrong choice.

I have seen the tutorial before and hadn't noticed the "don't follow this tutorial" comment. Isn't it just saying disconnect your old HDD first and boot from the pe disk?
Amusing that the restored OS in the video is XP.

It discusses restoring to a different destination partition which is what I am doing. == But as I said, I did the Copy and Paste and it is good. Thanks,
