Hi all.
I tried to do a backup with Macrium reflect from within windows 7 and I get an error and it will not finish. So I tried to do this by booting with the Macrium recue CD, same thing. It only says CRC error. After that I used windows backup and got some better info:
Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\svexxxxxxxxxx.com\15.5\Failed\1CEE2F472DA531F\LogFiles\edb.log. Error:(Data error (cyclic redundancy check). (0x80070017))

I looked for that folder and found 15.5, but there was no file in it.
I am stuck. What can I do to get a backup that I can use?
Thanks
Sven

Welcome
The most common cause of a failure to back up is a failing hard drive. I would back up my stuff, NOW. I would then run a chkdsk, to fix errors and then hope that it works. Even if it does your drive may be failing, take appropriate action.
In step 4, chose correct errors
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
Then edit your first post, remove the email addy. If curious, we do not want the spambots reading it.

Run the test on both the destination and origin Hard Drive
With all respect if you chose the correct option the test should take an hour plus.

Have you checked the status of the drive you are using to store your image (assuming it is an external).

Also you could run a system file check. From an elevated command prompt:
sfc /scannow

I would have thought you unchecked both boxes because it's your OS drive and you need to schedule the check (see end of the tutorial). You should have got some message telling you the drive is in use.

Yes you are correct.
this time I checked both boxes and it is still running the checkup.
at stage 4 it tells me that windows replaced clusters and it gives me the exact file that I mentioned in my first post.
I am at 93% of stage 5 and after it is done I will try again to use Macrium and back up my drive.
since I have a few bad clusters, does that tell me that the drive is going bad? I have SMART enabled and I think all drive have bad clusters. I guess I will have to keep an eye on it. if that happens again, I guess it would be time to replace the drive.
Thanks for your help
I will post back with the results of my back up

Brand new HD have bad clusters now and then. If it continues on a regular basis back up your stuff as quick as you can and shop for a new HD. Sorry. The average life is about 5 or 6 years.
BTW the only reason that I knew this answer is because it happened to me. Fortunately it was a one shot deal. I bought my computer 12/08. I back up regularly, because I know that I am on borrowed time.

I want to give you one last piece of information. The way that chkdsk works is that it moves the bad clusters, so they are no longer used. Chkdsk can only move so many clusters. If your hard drive begin to have the problem on a constant basis, after a while the procedure will no longer work. At that point I would get a new hard drive, regardless of age.

You can use
Download Center - Crystal Dew World
to keep an eye on reallocated sector count. If it climbs even over just a few months I'd dump the drive.
I use the portable version with no OpendCandy.

I downloaded crystal disk info and ran the program. I attach 2 screen shots and the only difference between HD 0 and HD 1 is in C5 and C6 The raw value has a 1 at the end, and it is yellow. Any comments on what that means?

Thanks
Sven

Your report is very close to mine. Caution is the important notation. Your Hard Drive may be a problem in the future. I would RMA, since it is new. Try for a replacement while it is still under warranty
Uncorrectable sector count is important. You probably shut down incorrectly etc and there is permanent damge which cannot be repaired, using the method that I gave you.
