Macrium Reflect v5 restore

This morning I had to restore an image using Macrium. The image was only 5 days old.

I had made both the Linux and Pe rescue disks. The Linux disk did NOT work at all.
The PE rescue disk loaded and first it did not load 3 drivers, but I did a scan and it found the drivers and loaded them.

After a lot of nail biting I think I got it to restore. I then restarted the computer, but on Bootup, it said "BOOTMGR" missing. It told me to restart again, but the same message came up.

How do I get my "BOOTMGR" Back??

it's important to do a trial-run and always test an imaging program before relying on it in a 'panic' situation. you can't just assume that it's going to work ok.

Are you sure that you included your "System Reserved" partition in the image you made 5 days ago?

I had the same thought. That is probably the cause. I recommend to always transfer the bootmgr to C: before one takes an image of C:. Then you are safe and do not have to muck around with the 100MB active system partition - worse even if you have a Dell. They put the bootmgr on the recovery partition.

With Macrium Reflect v5 there is no way to verify the image until you get ready to restore it.

To make a long story shorter , I went ahead and did a Clean install of Windows 7. It will probably take me a month to get all my software reinstalled, but it will not be the first time I have had to do this.

I just don't have any faith in this version of Macrium. I know that version 4 worked; I used it many times to restore images without any issues. I also know that Acronis works well (linux rescue disk work in v4). I will probably go back to using Acronis. Acronis is a little slower, but never failed me.

As far as I am concerned this problem is fixed.

I am not sure what happened here because we never analysed the causes of the failure. But I think you gave up too fast. We may have been able to resurrect the thing.

You need to have a v5.0 Linux CD to work with v5.0 Macrium.

You may have done this but did not state it.

Are you saying that the WinPE recovery disc does not work for you? - or do you mean that the V4.2 Linux disc is no good.

I tried to restore a single partition on a multi partition disk with the Linux recovery disc. But that did not work. It apparently allows only for full disk restores because that was all it offered as restore target. With the WinPE disc, I had no problem.

Never used a PE disk.
So this pertains to the Linux CD's.

There are supposed to be updates on the 5.0 Linux CD so it should be used with Macrium 5.0.
Why would they offer a new v5 Linux CD if the old v4 Linux will work properly?

If your using v4 Macrium then use the v4 Linux CD.

Just makes sense to have the right version of Linux CD for the right version of Macrium.

Why take a chance that it won't work when you need it.

I only have "C" so images are just that single partition. No System Reserve or "D" on the SSD.

I have no way to try what you were attempting.
I would need a multipartition image which I don't have.

All in all I liked the v4 Macrium software and v4 Linux disk better.

Right, the V4.2 Linux disc was more obvious. But the V5 WinPE DVD is not bad.

If you only image the system, I guess the V5 Linux CD will do. But I also image single data partitions of which there are always more than one on the HDDs. And recovering those seems to be impossible with the Linux CD - it was possible with the V4.2 Linux cd though.

I am not sure what caused the problem. I have Windows 8 installed on one hard drive and Windows 7 on another. I had be been playing around with Win8 and when I tried to go back to Win7, that when I had the problem. Did Win8 cause the problem? I had done this several times and never had an issue, but I do suspect Win8 caused the problem for Win7. Don't ask me how that could be but that is what I suspect.

All in all I liked the v4 Macrium software and v4 Linux disk better.

I liked Macrium v4 better than I did v5. I used the v4 several times to restore images and never had an issue. When I went to v5 I created both the Linux and PE rescue disks and tested both ot them and they seemed to work. It was only when had my problem that the Linux rescue disk would NOT work.

The other thing I liked about v4 was you could validate the image when it was made. You can not do that with v5.

Right now I have Acronis installed to make backup images. I may even install Macrium v4 (I think I still have v4 around somewhere) again since I do trust it. I will never use v5 again for sure.

At any rate Windows 7 is now working fine since I reinstalled it.

I recently installed Macrium v5 (free) and I see an option to Validate a backup image.
It's in the "Restore" tab / Archive Image "selected".
I haven't found a way to add the verify step to the image create process.
But, i can manually verify the image after creating it.
I'm testing Macrium on an XP SP3 machine...
I personally use Acronis TI, but I'm checking the BU options for people I support remotely.

One thing that could go wrong and give the bootmgr missing error is if system reserved was not restored as the Active partition.

An opinion on V5: on the surface it seems to have some nice additional features. One is a restore with 1MB alignment and it specifically mentions SSDs as one of the intended target drives. This is available with the free version. So it suggests you can reimage from a non SSD to an SSD with correct alignment.

Also using the DISM command you can insert new drivers into a pe disk. I would forget the linux disk.

I have not done an actual restore with the Unix disk but from what I have read it will restore just the partitions that are in the image you select and not affect any other partitions on the drive, except for this one statement:

Note that any partitions existing on this disk that overlap the partition(s) you are restoring will be lost.

If you have multiple partitions and and you have made a change to your HDD and move a partition into part of the space used for the restored partition then its trying to use the same space.

OK, I see. As an action after the image was originally taken. Thanks for clarifying. I doubt though whether that would work at all - if you changed the size of the receiving partition.
