Make bootable iso from student d/l

How to Create a Bootable ISO from a Student Windows 7 Download

If you get the student d/l and have 3 files :

Here's how:

1. Rt click each file, Properties > Unblock>Apply>OK.
NOTE: Make sure read only boxes are clear.

2. Rt click and run as admin on the .exe. You will get a folder called expandedsetup on your dektop with these inside:
EXPANDEDSETUPCONTENTS-2009-10-22_061340.jpg
   Note

If you receive this error:

We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only.

Continue.

3. D/L this zip, extract it and copy/move oscdimg.exe into C:\Windows\system32.
View attachment oscdimg.zip
4. Assuming expandedsetup is on your Desktop:

Vista/7 users open an elevated command prompt ( rt click cmd and run as admin) and type :

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

XP users commands are:

Code:
cd /d C:\windows\system32

Code:
oscdimg -u2 -b"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

5. You can copy and paste the above into elevated cmd.

Vista/7 users- replace your_username with your actual username.

XP users - replace USER with your actual username

6. Then press enter. Xp users press enter after each of their two commands.

7. If the expandedsetup folder is not on your desktop, replace with appropriate paths.

   Tip
You may wish to copy the expandedsetup folder directly onto the root of C:

The paths will be shorter and the command will be:

Code:
Oscdimg.exe –u2 –bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com –h C:\expandedSetup C:\7.iso

If your folder is elsewhere, to get the paths easily, press shift and rt click on etfsboot.com - select copy as path ( paste into notepad )

Shift and rt click on expanded setup - select copy as path - paste into notepad ) Use those instead of the above.

The spacing needs to be exact.
   Warning
When the .iso is created you will get this message:

WARNING: This image contains UDF file system structures.

That is normal as you are creating the udf filesystem.

8. A) You can burn the .iso to dvd as an image with an isoburner.
View attachment isoburner.zip
OR

B) You can use the Microsoft DVD/USB tool to burn the .iso to dvd or to use the .iso to make a bootable flash drive. Download the tool:
View attachment Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe
   Tip
To make a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file:

1. Click the Start button, and click Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool in the All Programs list to open the USB/DVD Download tool.
2. Click Browse and select the file in the Open dialog box.
3. Select USB to create a copy on a USB flash drive or DVD to create a copy on a DVD disk, then click Next.
4. If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the dropdown list and click Begin copying. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click Begin burning.

hello all :)

must an image be made for those that plan on performing the in-place upgrades? i'm trying to understand what the actual problem is i.e. what students all around the globe are having so much trouble achieving

If you only have a 32-bit system and you downloaded 64-bit Win7 you must make a bootable DVD since the installer will not run within XP's 32-bit environment.

and i'm guessing the same applies to trying that in Vista 32-bit yea? so is this why people are asking for refunds?

There are a lot of resons why people want a bootable .iso - to get a bootable dvd/flash drive.

You have a bootable copy, safe and away from your pc. If you can't get into windows and need to reinstall - you can use that (as long as you keep your product key safe). If you just have the files on your HD and you can't get in - what do you do? Also, you can boot it to system recovery options and effect repairs - you don't get that option when you run setup from the files - assuming you can get in at all.

i see. so your method of creating an ISO out of the files in the expandedSetup folder, did you get that from digital river? they don't mention any of this anywhere, do they? and is it true that when they were distributing the Windows 7 RCs (not sure if there was just one), they pre-packed it into a simple ISO for users to download and burn?

No, I didn't get it from Digital River - I figured it out. I hope a lot of people have found it useful.

Yes the RC was in .iso form.

MS must have their reasons for providing it as installation files.

I can't understand why people are asking for refunds - they only paid $30 was it?

Are they going to get 7 elsewhere at the same price?

Sure it takes a few minutes to make the .iso , but it's worth it.

Most ppl don't take the time to research fourms like this one for a fix to a problem. If it doesn't work simple right out of the box, they are confused and at a stand still.

Sure it takes a few minutes to make the .iso , but it's worth it.

A few minutes? Try 3 hours. The first burned DVD did not work, the second did. Huge pain in the ass if you ask me. I'd get my money back if I hadn't been able to make it work. Besides, the first night there were doubts any of this 'hacky' solution actually worked.

Any situation where you're making your own installation CD out of a cutup folder isn't 'simple' and I imagine far less technically advanced students will have issues... or are you forgetting the 20-30 pages of this thread full of people who copied and pasted the oscd string wrong?

I take issue with this. If Windows 7 was so great, it should work right out of the box. People shouldn't have to hack a solution together as early as install time. It doesn't set a good tone for using the rest of the application. How would you like it if you bought a car that needed its oil changed or battery replaced the first day you had it?

3... I mean 3 HOURS???? Sufferin Succotash!

There was an issue with the oscd string, but SIW2 fixed that days ago!

Remember that as an early adopter, we sometimes discover these issues for others! I remember spending days "fixing" Vista in the early "nothing worked right or was supported" days... It is the price we pay! And you only paid $30 USD for a product others are paying in the neighborhood of $130-$200!

Now you have found a forum that tells you exactely how to convert your student DL into an iso, how to burn your iso to a DVD, not to mention how to do a clean install with that $30 "Upgrade" DVD!

I do agree that DR needs to rememdy the DL format and make the DL an iso image... however there are still many novices that have no idea what an iso file is...many of them college students not in IT/CIS. So maybe DR thought this .exe formatted DL would make things easier...???

I think you are trying to run it from the dvd - instead of booting it from the dvd.

When you start the pc - you get white writing on a black screen.

It will say something like ;

F2 for setup

F11 for boot menu ( your F numbers may be different)

Press whatever F number it told you to for boot menu.

A few seconds later a menu will pop up. Arrow to cdrom drive. Put the dvd in the drive. Press Enter.

A few seconds later it asks "press any key to boot from cdrom drive". Press Enter.

Somebody had an issue with that tool and usb drive.

Or may be the dvd is duff of course.

Try burning it with the isoburner instead - select 4x as the speed.

I got the bootable disc working, so i formatted by harddrive of XP 32 Bit, managed to get Windows 7 installed, however at the end of the setup its asking for my CD-KEY / Product Key, but isn't taking it, is it not possible to install from clean or do i have to put XP 32 bit back on and "Upgrade?"

It says it cannot find the file boot.wim. Is that normal?

No.

Something wrong there.

Pick up the .iso with the free ( unregistered) version of PowerIso - and see if boot.wim is there. It is inside the sources folder.

Assuming it is , there is probably something wrong with the burn.

try using the isoburner on the tut page and burn at 4x.

You can either run the Win7 install again choosing the "upgrade" option or do a registry hack. Both are explained here:
