Making Icons

Hi Guys

Question for the GFX team really.

Ive been using These folder icons for a few years now (Purple Glass, Think its one of Mr Grims)



What I want to do is add to the folder icons to extend the choice a little. Now Im good with icons as in changing system files etc but making my own I have never attempted. What I want to do is add other downloaded icon pictures to the plain purple glass folder icon just to extend the range but how do I keep the see through front on the folder.
Below is an example of what I want to do but as you see the movie clapperboard is ontop of the folder rather than inside like the others. Any way to do this preferably in IcoFx as thats the only program I have used.

Hi Danny how are you doing
What I have done was take icon #5 the back of the folder and #6 the front of the folder and extract the 256 x 256 pixel image and save it as a .png with IcoFx.
Then use a image editor and put the back of the folder on first then put your item in next and then put the front on top of that. Then you'll have to use IcoFx to make the icon again here is a couple screenshots that may help you out. If you need further explanation let me know.

Ok that all makes sense, when you say image editor can that be done with simple paint or do I need something more.

I am doing well thank you for asking.
I have never tried it with Paint I'm not sure if it will work with layers. You could try GIMP - Windows installers or Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing they both work with layers and free. I use gimp so if you choose that I could help you.

You are right paint won't cope with the layers and transparency. Will install gimp and let you know how I get on.

Ok got the general gist of it.Its quite a bit to take in if you have not used it before. How do I resize an image, the second layer (Clapperboard) is to large, how do I shrink that layer and move it into a better position Jerry.



Ok worked out how to scale down that layer just how to move it into position now.



Got it Not to bad for first attempt lol



I presume I can then just use IcoFx to convert to .ICO
