Hi Folks, I'm experiencing some stange "crashes" with my older Games on Windows 7.
CS:S or Battlefield 2142 won't really start. When I click the Icon or the game in the Steam-gameslist they pop-up with a black screen and after a few seconds I am on my desktop again. There is no error message or something like that. the games are still running, but only minimized in the taskbar. If I click on it there, they popup again and the same procedure beginns as above.

OS : Windows 7 x64 RC1 Build 7100
Drivers: ATI Catalyst version 9.6
Soundmax AD1986A-Audio

The strange thing is, that newer games like Sacred 2 or WoW or Prototype are running perfectly, without any problems.

Pls help me :(

Since these games are played online it sounds like windows firewall maybe kicking you out to the desktop, go to you control panel and then into the firewall and make sure both css(hl.exe) and bf2142(bf2142.exe & bf2142pace.exe) are allowed threw the firewall.

Have you tried running the older games in xp compat mode?

So, the Firewall was not the source of this Error. Both were allowed, but the game crashed to the desktop again. I think it has something to do with my Resolution. I have had the same probleme with Peggle (640 x 480 Resolution)
without compat-mode with lower resolution, there has been the same error.

the compat-mode didn't work with cs:s / hl.exe. the same crash as before.
BF2142 in compat-mode (Windows XP SP3 and Admin) couldn't find my Game-DVD in the DVD-Drive.

It's really strange...

I know that bf2142 has to be set to use widescreen support right click the icon and look for something that says -fullscreen and change it to -widescreen. Also make sure you have the 1.5 patch loaded.
I cant remember how to get css to have a set resolution on start.

in steam there is an option called declare startvalues (or something like that. I only know the german term). I set there a rule : - width 1440 height 900
It's the right way but I didn't work either.... Same with Battlefield 2142.

Like you said I changed the value +fullscreen 1 to +widescreen 1 in the Icontarget, but there was the same error like before....

Did you install the DirectX 9 that both of the older games require??
The newer games want DirectX 10.

I think I know why this error occurs. Shortly after I had installed Windows 7 I "cleaned" the registry with CCleaner.... maybe that has damaged some registry-entries and so Dx9 Games won't start correctly.

You can test this one with uninstalling one of them and then rebooting and reinstall if it works then go out of that game and then try the one you didn't uninstall and see if it black screens if it does then you have your solution.

I'm having the same issue with any semi-demanding games in Windows 7 X86... A short time period into the game, it will crash to the desktop. SupCom, Neverwinternights 2, Crysis. I been reading alot about issues with the virtual memory ceiling. In 32bit OS's, the ceiling is 2 gig, 64 bit at 4 gig, regardless of the paging file size. The virtual memory is split between the OS and video, and once it is close to, or is taken up, the crash occurs. Typically, it's just the game that fails to respond and the OS is still operational. My paging file size is set to 8146 meg, and when my crash occurs, the memory meter shows that 96% (O_O) of my memory is used! That means, in theory, nearly 16 gig (between paging file and physical memory) has been consumed!? No way... especial not with SupCom. Also read about making modifications to the boot.ini file, to manually adjust the virtual memory size but I wouldn't suggest it unless you know what your doing. Any input to this matter would be most helpful, especially when it's considered that the machines listed in this particular forum should have no issues running these games.
