MBR Error 1 on startup again

This problem had been addressed 4 years ago in this thread (http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/227705-mbr-error-1-startup.html), but the conditions are now different.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300 laptop, upgraded with Kingston 120GB SSD and 300GB Hitachi HD in a CDROM craddle, running Win7. From the moment I installed the SSD and moved the HD to CDROM craddle, when I power on from Hibernate state, the BIOS message "MBR Error 1" appeared on screen. Thereafter it booted after soft reset (Cntr-Alt-Del), that is the message appears after first powerup reset only. Curiously when I remove the CDROM craddle with the HD, laptop boot OK from Hibernate, without error. Problem was bypassed by not using hibernate at all, since laptop had fast boot time with SSD.

Recently I upgraded to Windows 10 and the same "MBR Error 1" appears now always at first powerup and is bypassed by soft reset, regardless it was powered down or hibernated.

In both cases changing boot order in BIOS didn't help, since error always reappears.

Any suggestions??????

Hello and welcome mate now two things I can think of straight away is a) what is set in the BIOS as first boot device? My old Toshiba here always goes looking in the optical slot even when first boot is set to the hard drive - b) if you are running 10 then it maybe worth a try in that forum (see top of page same folks same sign up as here in 7)

Now it could also be an issue with the upgrade too - not sure but it is an older machine and thereby maybe not support 10 as well as dedicated machines are.

Thanks for your reply. I have changed the order of the boot devices many times, but the error persists. Also the error disappears when I disconnect the internal hard disk. If that matters, hard disk and cdrom both have SATA interface. Same error existed both in Win7 (albeit when powering up from Hibernate) and in Win10 (from cold boot). Warm boot bypasses the error. Think it is a BIOS compatibility error, since it appeared when I used a hard disk in place of CDROM.

Yes mate but I think this may be an issue with running the dual boot and the 10 forum would be a good place to start. But if they cannot help you there then by all means come back.:)

I have to clarify that there is no dual boot. Error initially appeared when I used Win7 and migrated to the new Win 10 installation. However I will follow your advice and post the same issue in Win10 forum as well. Thanks again.
