You could check in your BIOS setup.
See if you have settings to allow USB devices to wake the PC.
Maybe the USB port does not get power when the PC is turned off?

I use a WMC compatible remote to sleep and wake the PC.
That works fine.
It won't start the PC if it's turned off, but for me the PC is always on or sleeping, so I never tried to figure out if there is a work around to start the PC from a Powered off state...

Cheers for the reply man.

Yes I've enabled wake from s3 with usb in the bios, and unchecked save power to usb sockets when not in use.

Normally I use WOL with my iphone, but that's having woes with my network adapter , so I thought (naively) that wake from usb would be a quick temporary fix!

Guess I may as well get my WOL back up and running!

Well, seems like you got the BIOS settings covered...

Just as another guess, maybe the USB port you are using is getting powered off, no matter what the setting.
Maybe front USB ports always get powered off, and back USB ports work differently...
If the USB dongle is plugged into a front port, can you try it from a back port?

Don't know if you're interested, but you could also try using sleep rather than power off...
Some people like it, some don't...
I use and like it, nice having the PC start in 5-10 seconds with all apps open and running.

Hi David,

I have tried both those things, i don't like to post here until i've tried everything! Puzzling isn't it, i don't suppose you can deduce anything from the log?

I hear ya - I like to try everything I can think of as that's how i learn best...
I did look at the log, and didn't see anything that would help here :(

As you're willing to try everything, here's a tutorial for a trace you can look at and see if you think it might help.
You'll probably need help from cluberti, the tutorial author if you use this...
I've never used it...but I would if I couldn't find any "simple" solution ...
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...up-shutdown-sleep-hibernate-reboot-trace.html
Not sure if it will help here as the PC doesn't power up, but a tut you can review just to know and learn.
