It all started when I wanted to downgrade media player 12 to 11...
I followed these steps:

1. Run services.msc
Stop the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

2. Take ownership of these files

=> All files in "Program Files\Windows Media Player\" folder
=> All files starting with "wmp" in System32 folder
=> wmploc.dll.mui in "Sytem32\en-us\" folder

3. Run the media player 11 installer.

4. Before u reboot, open regedit and delete this key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions"

5. Reboot

I kept a full registry export of my registry...
Installation did not go so smooth, had errors in process.
Now, media player from "program files" folder- works, but media player from X86 folder does NOT!
I can't seem to upgrade, and reg backup file does not work!

What should I do?
Thanks!

Best bet, restore from before the above, or re-install. You can alo run sfc/scannow to check system files, do a repair install

If it were mine I would clean install

sfc /scannow does not work.
I don't want to start a clean installation of windows I dont have time for that.

When I double click a movie, there's a pop up saying: "windows media player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft website?" But if I chose "yes", I get redirected to the website but there's a message: " There is no download available for this operating system. Please visit Windows Update to check for the latest Windows Media Player updates. "

very difficult I don't even know what I did.
it took me a while and I did all sorts of things but what I think sealed the deal was:
went to "turn windows features on and off" from add/remove programs, removed media player completely.
installed wmplayer 11 (this time had no errors) - and then removed it
went back to "turn windows features on and off", and installed wmplayer 12 again,
then I only had 1 file with a wrong version (wmplayer.exe - instead of 12.0.7600.16385, it was 12.0.7000.7000) so I searched the computer for the newer version, fownd it somwhere in wow64 or amd64 folder I think, replaced it (had to take ownership for that) and that's it I think...
somewhere in between I used a program to change file versions I dont remember when exactly or whats it's name.
hope this helps :)
