I have not had any problems up until tonight. Tonight media player is freezing on playback with audio and video files. The pauses are random and for varying lengths of times. Media Player itself if you click on the window says "Not responding" and stays that way until it unfreezes. A check of the processes running shows nothing running that normally isnt. The CPU usage is about 1% to 2% and does not spike when the freeze happens. There is no unusual disk access at the time. It just freezes like its away with the fairies.

The rest of the PC still works fine and I can do anything else at all with it.

I have done a search and see plenty of references about freezes but nothing that indicates a cause or fix.

Any ideas?

As a general fix, you can try a system file check, though I doubt it'll fix anything more than a reboot would.

Open an elevated command prompt (Start > Search "cmd.exe" > Right Click cmd.exe > Run as Administrator)

Type in this command: sfc /scannow

That was one of the first things I tried. Tried reboot, tried complete power down and reset everything and no better. Probably a fresh install may fix it but as it is a laptop with no real DVD to restore from I am not going down that track unless I really have to.
