does win 7's memory diagnostic tool always takes a long time from 21% to 22% on extended run? standard, short tests finish quickly i can run 2/3 tests in no time at all

it does on mine , i thought originally it had hung on me but it eventually moved on it does it everytime so im assuming that particular test takes a while

Yes. Any memory test can take a long time.

I prefer to use the 3rd party tool rather than the one that is built in to Windows. One of the reasons for this is that the alternative has a smaller footprint and is independant of the OS.

Agreed. And it's much much faster to do several complete tests.
