First let me say that my Win 7 installation is working perfectly - except for one minor problem.

I am currently using a Logitech wired keyboard together with a Microsoft "Natural" wireless laser mouse 7000. I prefer to use a Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000 and this is where the problem starts.

If I connect this mouse while Win 7 is running it installs the drivers and works perfectly. When I reboot, the system gets through all it's POST checks then goes to "Starting Windows" and freezes. The only solution is to change the mouse to any other (I've borrowed several to try) and Windows boots as normal. All the correct Microsoft drivers are loaded. The problem mouse works on other computers, just not mine

Please don't get me wrong, this is not a life threatening matter and if I can't find an answer I won't exactly be heart broken. I'm just curious is all.

Any replies will be gratefully acknowledged.

Have you tried uninstalling all the drivers you downloaded and removing all the drivers in Device Manager?

Maybe the generic drivers will work better.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your quick reply Jonathon.

Yes, I have tried everything I can think of including you suggestion. The wireless transmitter is obviously connected to the machine by USB and I have tried booting with no other USB devices connected only to have the same problem.

I am unable to discover the frequency of the transmission, but it is not 2.4 GHz which the other mouse uses. I can take the problem mouse into the other room, plug it into my laptop which also runs Win 7 and it works perfectly.

My best guess is that it is interfering with something on the computer. I have nothing else wireless connected to it. I have even changed channel on my router with no success. I have also tried plugging it in via a USB powered hub with the same depressing result.

This machine is upgraded from Vista and the mouse worked perfectly on that.

Apart from this annoying problem Win 7 is behaving annoyingly well. So much so that I am now dual booting with Ubuntu 9.10 purely for something to fiddle with when I'm bored ;)

For some unknown and strange reason this problem has suddenly cured itself tonight.

How and why are beyond me. I touched nothing and altered nothing before plugging the mouse in. I rebooted several times and it's working as advertised.

Ain't computers wonderful

Now is a great time to create a System Restore Point. That way, you can always get back to the current setup.
