I've just been invited to take a survey to qualify for the ongoing beta of MSE - testing new builds before the general public..

The beta begins in November.

Taken the survey now, boy is it long.. :D

The anti banner feature is available in Kaspersky Internet Security which blocks ads and banners from websites. ;) A very nice feature which helps page load faster.

yep that's what I'm lookin for.. are there any alternatives for a free anti banner ? :)
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS

Free, easy, and as old as the internet.

Ok, I've deleted this file, now what? LOL Just kidding! But seriously, what do I do with this?

Populate it.

hosts file - Google Search

Hosts file - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An easy tool is HostsMan - abelhadigital.com

When you type in www.screwmeover.com or ANY URL, windows first queries the HOSTS file for the IP address. If screwmeover is listed, windows gets the IP from there. If not listed, the request is sent to your DNS server.

When used for protection and/or ad/banner blocking, the HOSTS file references the URL to an IP of 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1. This means your PC. The browser will return Page Not Found.

When using tools like HostsMan or any publicly provided HOSTS file entries, it is common for websites that you want to go to to be blocked. MySpace is an example. Edit the file to suit your needs. A # as the first character on a line disables the entry.

Thanks Antman! You get rep points for teaching me something new :D

Yes it does. You should only have one anti-virus running at a time anyways, they tend to trip each other up.

I am thinking of putting MSE on my mom's new computer I built. Is it going to be a pretty good "set up and leave" app? I normally do virus scans with Avast or AVG once a week. Is this program worth using? From what I hear....it is looking good.

Any major problems with it? For a free app, it sound pretty good.

I think it will be fine for someone who just goes to 4-5 sites on the net and rarely downloads anything. (my Mom) I will try it for this build and see how it does. Thanks for the input.

I have 1 problem with the Security Essentials. Yes it has a very light footprint, but it is always keeping an eye on you so to say as wanting to collect data. That's ok if I wanted it but there is no way to elect to send or not to send. Why do they want to know so much about the user?
The ability to elect whether or not I want someone peering into my use is why I choose the products that I use on my pc.Data collection should be an elective, not an option on how much you want to send. Why don't they(Microsoft) send me personal and not so personal information on the systems they use? I'm just as curious as they are.:sarc:

I've used ForeFront for about 1½ years now, but switched to MSE when it "hit the shelves" to test it out. So far I am very pleased with it.
And as you can see from this article Microsoft Security Essentials or Forefront: Which should a Windows user choose? | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com, the engine is the same.

Thanks for the link, its good to know. I was close to just installing MSE on 7 too and calling it a day as forefront was a slight pain to install even though MS lists it as 7 compatible. I was lucky enough to find the /NOMOM way though I think it disabled the alert system. I'll stick with it until the new forefront hits next year (or if forced to reinstall windows) and see if that is any better.
Thanks
